New CP's for C300: TRUvid2, TRUcine, & TRUlog

Ok, I'll get the CP's uploaded in a few hours, but here are some framegrabs of the image you get with TRUvid2. I spent about a week testing and tweaking to get the most natural looking colors possible without the usual distortions: red stays red and doesn't curve to orange in high saturation (stoplights, taillights, etc), yellow doesn't skew to green, green doesn't skew to cyan, and the red tinge in blue sky is gone. Skin tones still look great, and to my eye this is about the most color accurate I've seen the camera to be across the entire spectrum.

TRUvid2 was designed to be bright, vivid, & punchy (but not in a cartoony way like you get with EOS Std); for when you need to deliver right away and you know there won't be time for color work. TRUcine looks great out of the box w/ nice DR, really hangs on to the highlights & will grade very well. And TRUlog is for when you need a color-accurate c-log profile that doesn't skew the greens to cyan, maintains solid reds, and also keeps the blues in check a bit more (although, I do find that aspect of the CINEMA profile often very pleasing).

And here are the CP's!

TRUvid2: http://www.mediafire.com/?f9t99xno5r7af90
TRUcine: http://www.mediafire.com/?v2k2am15y94nmwi
TRUlog: http://www.mediafire.com/?6eh3bg7epqbb654

Just download the .CPF file and place it into your C300's freshly formatted SD card. The .CPF files go into the C_PICT folder found in the master private folder. You'll see this directory structure after you format the SD card in the C300 and plug it into your computer.

Then place the SD card back into your camera, and you can use the CP's directly from the SD card or copy them onto your camera.

As always, comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated! Enjoy!

Many thanks for these Cps look great on the page.

Up to my ears editing at present, but will try these asap.

Had my C300 since late February, this really is the best camera I have ever had, for ease of use, producing great shots every time.

Many thanks for all your in put cow punk52.

Let me know if your ever in the UK.

Thanks for the CP's! Is it fair to say the TRUcine can be used with only minimal grading in post.
Thanks again for your generosity with posting these CP's.
Cheers

Yes, TRUcine is designed to give you a film-look with minimal post work; but the profile does respond to grading a little more generously than TRUvid2 does, which is very much a baked-in look meant to be delivered directly from camera. Another quick note is that noise from higher ISO's will be more apparent in TRUvid2 because of the gamma's mid-tone boost and higher color saturation. TRUcine and TRUlog will have very subtle noise characteristics all the way through 20,000 ISO. Thanks everyone, hope you enjoy the profiles! If there are any requests for particular looks that you'd like to have profiles for, I'll try to make them- just let me know!

Thanks for that, TRUcine sounds perfect. Though I seem to have problems downloading the CP's? I keep getting a download error.... any thoughts?
Thank you!

That's strange! I just downloaded on my phone with the link w/o a problem... Is the link taking you to the mediafire page? What's the error message that you're getting?

cowpunk,

I used truvid2 yesterday on a pretty high profile shoot, and I must say that I was very happy with the results. As much as I LOVE my c300, one of the things I struggle with the most, is that when I am in a doc setting, and running around without monitors, the LCD screen is never really spot on as far as color goes, there is always some sort of shift from what you see. It was nice to get back to my hotel and check footage and know that I nailed it.

Thanks for the awesome cp!

PS. If anyone has figured out a recipe to the LCD settings, let me know, ive been experimenting, but still haven't really gotten it dialed in.

That's a ringing endorsement - thanks NYLion! I'm really pleased that the profile worked out for your shoot. I've had the same misgivings as you about accuracy on the on-board LCD, but there aren't enough controls to really be able to dial it in properly like you would a full-on production monitor. It's quite good for what it is, though, and I'd say arguably best in class for the category. I've found it best to trust the vectorscope when in doubt about the color representation on screen. The scopes never lie!

Thanks for the profiles Cowpunk!
I tried them all, looked great.

On the weekend I was testing a Profile made with the EOS STD matrix, and the C-Log curve, with blacks dipped to proper levels. Looked great to my eye, I shot all the problem colors and they looked accurate.
Thanks for all your suggestions, now I can finally relax and shoot with this camera properly!

Can anyone share screengrabs from projects they've shot on these CPs? Unfortunately my company's C300 is in another country so I don't have the ability to go out and try them myself quite yet, but I'm interested in seeing how you guys are applying Cowpunk's CPs -- particularly TRUvid2 and TRUcine. 90% of the time the video I shoot on the C300 doesn't get graded since I work in the web industry and we have such low turnaround times, so a color accurate straight-to-delivery CP sounds very enticing. So far, I've been making it by on the default Cine1 profile with pretty decent results (see video below) but I'd still like to fiddle around more.

Cowpunk, what would be your recommendations as far as building a CP on the Cine1 gamma curve while still getting poppier colors? I agree with you that the EOS Std. CP is too punchy as far as colors go...so I guess I'm looking to split the difference. How would you go about designing a CP that gives you the filmic treatment of shadows and highlights but delivers striking colors with little to no color grading in post?

Loaded question, I know. If it's not appropriate for the forum, PM me and I can give you my email address. I have a feeling with this new camera I'm going to be reading a lot of your threads and posts!

I'd say to start with the TRUcine profile, and maybe bump up the color gain until it reaches a satisfactory level for you out of the box. It's designed with -12 color gain because, to me, that gives a softer and more filmic color response - but as always ymmv! Try 0, and then try somewhere along the +10 to +15 range. The cine1 gamma gives a nice dynamic range and good shadow detail, and I think the highlights are better than cine2.

Personally, my favorite for delivery straight out of the box is TRUvid2. It's a different response curve, but definitely looks great with no grading and holds around 11.25 stops of DR (close to the same DR as TRUcine, which probably gives you another half stop).

Those concert framegrabs look great. The colors are just the right amount of vivid I'm looking for. I'll give these a try and post frames and stuff sometime in the next two weeks. I think I'll also try and figure out a way to merge the vivid colors of TRUvid2 with the gamma curve of Cine1. Thanks a lot for your help Cowpunk.

FreshDV.com just posted an article on the TRU line of CP's that I made. Matthew Jeppsen shot a commercial down in Mexico City with the TRUlog profile and really enjoyed it. He also posted some chroma chart video & still frame samples of the various TRU profiles compared to some of the standard Canon profiles.

Article here: TRUcine – Color Rich Canon C300 Picture Profiles

The profiles are also mirrored on his site for download.

This is a short collection of clips I shot in Casco Bay on the Maine coast. I used a combination of my Canon C300 custom profiles TRUcine & TRUlog. There are a couple of clips shot with TRUvid2 at the end. All handheld with a 24-105 lens. Sorry about the shaky shots and missed focus.
