F3: New Convergent Design "Odyssey"

Dear Friends,

Here is our current plans.

First, our Compressed Codecs Option will be free with both the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q.

The units ship as Monitors only, but when a Convergent Design SSD is inserted, it unlocks the "Compressed Codecs Option" immediately.

Initially this will mean that the Avid DNxHD codec will be available. We are trying to have this ready for our intial shipping date of July, 2013, for the Odyssey7Q.

The Decode portion, the "dec" of "codec" is done and working great. Our engineering team has been working on the encode portion for some time now.

And later (probably next year), we will add, for free, another very popular codec, but we have to code it first, then obtain certification before we can discuss it by name.

And once the CD SSD is inserted all of the currently avaiable recording options will be available for your testing, but there will be a watermark in the images.

There will never be a watermark in the Compressed Codecs Option (DNxHD for now), and recording options rented or purchased will not have watermarks, just those in demo mode.

And we have two other high priority recording option projects:

Canon C500 support, full support for all modes of the Canon C500 in one unit and

Sony FS700 support, support for HD, in compressed, and full uncompressed, 2K Raw up to 240 fps and 4K full uncompressed up to 30 fps.

It is our goal to have the two above recording options ready by the end of July, 2013.

Thus, if we meet our goals, one will be able to record in Avid DNxHD, and with extra cost options, full Uncompressed in HD and 2K, Canon C500 Modes, 2K + 4K + Quad HD, 4K Half Raw and Quad HD Half Raw, and Sony FS700 modes. If some of these are late, then they will be added via a later firmware release.

We are also working on a recording option for Weisscam, IO Industries, Indiecam, P&S Technik, and Lux Media Plan HD/2K (with Raw options) cameras.

Some other recording options, such as ARRIRAW may not be available until December, 2013.

Another recording option supports recording four video streams into four separate recordings using Avid DNxHD, all in one Odyssey7Q. I do not have an estimate date for this option yet.

While I reported that we were unable to support 3D LUT's, our engineers took another look at this and feel that they will be able to support 3D LUT's.

So, let's just consider this a "maybe" and I will announce this later when our engineers have had time to implement the 3D LUT's. It is certainly our goal to implement 3D LUT's.

And while we reported July 15 as the initial shipping date for the Odyssey7Q, I now say July in order to give a little leeway to our team.

On a very positive note, we feel that all of our monitoring features that we have announced, which is an extensive list, will be ready in July.

Our team has our first pass of the Color Vectorscope working, and I am certain that we will improve on it prior to July.

Prior to NAB our team had Zebras and False Color working, but did not have time to integrate into our "master code", so we did not demonstrate these at NAB.

We did demonstrate Focus Assist (three modes), Waveform Monitor (multiple modes) and Histogram (multiple modes) at NAB.

Our Focus Assist is an interesting story.

Our team was creating a Focus Assist, showing Video + Edges that are in focus (sharp edges) (in Red, Blue or Green, plus vibrating colors, if desired to distinguish the edges from items in the scene.)

I had asked for a new mode, where only the items in focus were visible.

Our team implemented this as Focus Assist Mode 2 (Edges Only) and only the edges that are in focus are visible. This works very well.

But, then they added Mode 3, (Edge Enhanced) where only the Edges are shown, but any edge that is detected, even if it is not in focus will be shown, but the edges actually in focus are shown in color.

Some labeled this our "Tron" mode. While it looks cool in red, green, or blue, the important part is it is very useful for showing what is in focus. This is now my favorite of the three modes.

(These modes are much harder to describe than actually use!)

At NAB, we did not have our human interface for these Focus Assist modes as fine-tuned as I would have liked, and we are greatly improving that now. Our team is working on better ways to instantly activate your favorite Focus Assist Modes, thus you will be able to choose which modes you like, which sensitivity, which colors, etc, and quickly engage and disengage these modes.

As it was, with our less than perfect ways to engage these modes, almost everyone liked the Focus Assist options that we demonstrated at NAB.

And we have some improvements planned for our Waveform Monitor. What we demonstrated was good (maybe very good) but they will be better soon.

For example, our Waveform Monitor is available in Full Screen, Picture-in-Picture (overlay mode), and in Luma Only, RGB, RGB Parade, and Red Only, Green Only and Blue Only.

But, we were showing our Luma Only in yellow, and I feel that white would be nicer.

We received a suggestion from an industry leader, for activating our 1:1 Pixel Mode (zooming), which we immediately accepted.

This will allow one to select which area of the image to zoom into instantly.

We expect to have this ready by July also.

Side Notes:

For the FS700, the Odyssey7Q is required, the Odyssey7 will not be able to support all of the high speed/high resolution modes of the updated FS700.

The Odyssey7 will work with the original FS700, but only in Comrpessed Codecs modes, no uncompressed modes, and no high speed/high resolution modes.
Thus, for anyone that even comtemplating upgrading their FS700, we recommend the Odyssey7Q.

Since the Odyssey7 cannot be upgraded to the Odyssey7Q, please choose carefully while planning for the future.

The Odyssey7Q will support the extra cost recording options, such as FS700 support, ARRIRAW Support (Later), Canon C500 Support, many HD/2K POV cameras, full uncompressed, and certain F55 recording modes. But these extra cost recording options will not be available on the Odyssey7, just on the Odyssey7Q.

This is a change, and it is based on the feedback from NAB attendees.

Almost everyone wanted the Odyssey7Q, but I realize that not everyone, nor every segment of our industry gets to go to NAB.

We still feel that the Odyssey7 will be very popular, especially since we added the Compressed Recording Option for free.

We just feel that Canon C500 users, and ARRI ALEXA users will want the Odyssey7Q for the many extra features that it offers.
And those wanting to record full uncompressed will also want the Odyssey7Q.

We plan on releasing the prices for our recording options and our SSD's as early as next week.

So the Odyssey7 becomes a great monitor that can become a great compressed recorder with the addition of an SSD or two.

I hope this helps.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your fulsome reply. I do not wish to appear as an ingrate given the feature set as outlined, but would it be possible to add a 2x (times) switch feature to the vectorscope information to allow for effective use with color charts (DSC Labs, Macbeth and so on).

Best regards,
Andrew

Dan your killin it with the communication. Keep it up. Lots of people watching this develop. I wish all companies were as open...

Wow, great detailed reply Dan. I feel reassured to put a pre-order in for our FS700. I'm not experienced with the DNxHD codec. How does it compare with ProRs HQ. With CS7 supporting DNxHD (I understand), this could be a good starting point.

Dear Andrew,

Yes, we will have a 2X zoom on our Color Vectorscope.

And i have asked for a variable zoom up to 10X zoom, for cases where the colors are all a blob in the middle of the display, so that they can be analyzed better when expanded.

An industry professional requested this feature and we intend to provide it.

Dear Peter,

Avid DNxHD and ProRes are very similar when one gets down to the "Essence" which is the actual video, not the wrapper.

Avid DNxHD supports 36, 100, 145, and 220 Megabits per second. at 220 Megabits per second, the data can be in 8 bits or 10 Bits.

They recenly added DNxHD 444, which records at 440 Mbps in 10 Bits. We need to get approval from Avid before we can add the 444 version. We definitely want to add this version.

http://www.avid.com/static/resources/US/documents/DNxHD.pdf

If one is using Final Cut Pro and/or other Non-Linear Editors, one can go to the Avid Website and download the Avid DNxHD codecs for free.

Then Avid DNxHd is integrated into Final Cut Pro or other NLE's just like ProRes.

Our plans are to support both the Quicktime wrapper ".mov" and the MXF wrapper, ".mxf"

I hope this helps.

Dear Friends,

It is our intention to offer every professional monitor feature possible to our Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q monitors, to the limit of our hardware (which is very capable in each case).

Of course the Odyssey7Q has more code space, so we can add more features that are active simultaneously, thus the Odyssey7Q supports using a Waveform Monitor, a Histogram, a Focus Assist, two levels of Zebras, False Color all simultaneously with many of the features being in one of the four separate quadrants.

On the Odyssey7, we have both full screen and overlay (Picture-in-Picture) modes. This allows two levels of Zebras, Horizon Indicator, and a Waveform Monitor or a Histrogram to be active simultaneously which is not shabby, but the Odyssey7Q allows more features to be active simultaneously since it has a "Four Quadrant" mode.

If you see a professional monitor or recorder feature that we have missed, and it is important to you, please let us know, we may be able to add it. Of course we may have to add it after July 2013 via a firmware update. We have a very talented engineer dedicated to our monitor features and he has been doing an outstanding job in my humble opinion.

We have decided not to include Standard Definition analog video (composite or component) inputs. But we will support Standard Definition video via SDI (SD-SDI).

There are many analog video to SDI converters available for when analog video is required.

If you ask for a feature, please lets us know how important it is to you, after all, we do have to prioritize feature requests.

Hello Dan

If I read your post correctly, recording uncompressed slog 444 out of the F3 will be available some time down the road and only on the Odessey 7Q. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Harry,

We plan on having the recording option for the F3, F23, F35 and many other cameras too numerous to list, for recording full uncompressed 4:4:4 RGB in DPX ready for the Odyssey7Q ready in July 2013.

At this time, we do not plan on offering this option on the Odyssey7.

Based on customer feedback so far, people that have or use the Sony F3, F23, F35 and other good cameras capable of outputing 4:4:4 have overwhelmingly told us that they want to purchase the Odyssey7Q.

Also, the above mentioned recording option will record 4:4:4 RGB in DPX from 4:2:2 YCbCr sources.

The SMPTE Spec for DPX supports both 4:4:4 RGB and 4:2:2 YCbCr, but available software only supports 4:4:4 RGB, so we have to convert 4:2:2 to 4:4:4 before recoring in DPX (which is an industry standard for recording full uncompressed files.)

One of the major features of the Odyssey7Q is the ability to record, with extra cost recording options full uncompressed or Raw (from Raw cameras) while simultaneously recording a Proxy file.

The Proxy file will have the exact same starting and ending points, the exact same timecode on every frame, and the exact same filename, thus making an off-line, on-line workflow easier.

The Odyssey7 is not capable of this important professional feature.

And the Quad-Split Monitoing function in the Odyssey7Q allows the live video plus three separate image analysis tools to be presented simultaneusly.

Thus one can have Live Video with two level Zebras, plus in three other quadrants, Waveform Monitor, Histogram, Focus Assist or False Color.

Side Note:

We realize that some will just want the Odyssey7, and the Odyssey7 certainly has many great applications. For anyone wanting to record using a compressed codec, the Odyssey7 is an approrpirate choice. While we will only offer Avid DNxHD to start, we plan to offer, for free, another very popular codec later.

So, with the vast majority of cameras, including DSLR's that can output a clean image, the Odyssey7 can be an appropriate choice.

This would include the Nikon D800, the Canon 5D Mark III, the Sony Ex1/Ex1R/EX3, many Panasonic cameras, etc. Both HD-SDI and HDMI inputs and outputs are present on the Odyssey7.

I continue to talk about the differences between the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q, since we do not want anyone to purchase an Odyssey7 thinking that they will get the Odyssey7Q features.

This is important to us and to our customers, since the Odyssey7 cannot be upgraded later to the Odyssey7Q, thus one should make an informed decision.

Also, please note that we originally planned to have full the uncompressed recording option available in the Odyssey7.
But since there has not been a customer demand for this combination, we have decided not to offer it.

Background:

Using general purpose computers, one writes a program, such as the ability to record full uncompressed video, then tests it, then generally it will work on other appropriate computers.

In our world, using much faster Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA's), similar to a computer but very different and much faster for our application, programs developed for one version of an FPGA will most likely not work (or will have to be thoroughly tested) if used on another version of FPGA.

The FPGA in the Odyssey7Q has a much larger code space (number of "logic gates") than the one in the Odyssey7.

Thus, all of the thousands of hours of testing that we put into the Odyssey7Q has to be duplicated for the Odyssey7.

So, if we limit the recording options available in the Odyssey7 to "Compressed Codecs Only", then we can bring the Odyssey7 to market faster, since our testing time will have been greatly reduced.

I hope this helps.

Hi Dan,

Will the Odyssey7 be capable of recording 4:4:4 at 50/60p to its compressed codecs?

Cheers

Dear Dan

Thank you very much for your detailed response. All of this is great news. Looks like Convergent has a real winner on their hands with the Odyssey line up.

All the best.

Hi Dan,

Will the Odyssey7 be capable of recording 4:4:4 at 50/60p to its compressed codecs?

Cheers

Dear Grug,

I checked Avid's documenation for the Avid DHxHD 444 codec and the other very popular codec's documentation and they both dp not seem to support 4:4:4 at 50/60p.

Avid DNxHD does support 4:2:2 at 1080p50, 1080p59.94, and 1080p60.

http://www.avid.com/static/resources/US/documents/DNxHD.pdf

For comparison, I check the following resource also:

http://documentation.apple.com/en/f...dWhenAssociatingWithMessierRevision-XDC1-SW19

So, the combination of 4:4:4 and 50p or 60p does not seem to be supported by the popular compressed codecs at this time.

The Odyssey7Q, using an extra cost option, full uncompressed recording, and other options, will support record 4:4:4 1080p50, 59.94 and 60.

(All of this is subject to change, as the codecs may start supporting more options and we may find a way.)

Dan Keaton

Initially no. But we plan to add another very popular codec which may allow us to record both 4:4:4

Dan, I love being referred to as an "industry professional." And I believe it was in the AbelCine booth that the term "Tron mode" was coined.

Dan,

I always loved the way the Nano seemed to draw no power at all. When put on the same battery as a monitor the Nano just sipped juice and the battery discharge times were nearly the same as without it. Comparatively speaking the Samurai is somewhat similar.

Even though I know it's processing a lot of data, I have to ask; how is the Odessey on battery life?

Thanks,
Duke

Thanks Dan, 4:2:2 for the occasional times I need 50/60p for slow motion isn't too bad.

Dear Mitch,

Yes, on both counts.

You are certainly an Industry Professional. And you teach classes on a wide variety of subjects, lenses, and monitors and more.

And it was very hard a few months ago to be present at one of your monitor classes while having to keep quiet about our new Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q's.

And Tron mode does capture the essense of our "Edge Enhanced" Focus Assist Mode. Items in focus will be in outline, (the in-focus edges), and they will be in pure Red, Green, or Blue.

While this sounds strange, it is very user friendly, and very easy to see what is in focus.

Dear Duke,

For comparison, the nanoFlash draws 5.8 watts maximum.

The Odyssey7 and 7Q draw 8 Watts in Monitor Mode and 15 watts maximum while recording to two SSD's simultaneously at maximum data rate.

For many modes, 12 watts or less would be typical.

Dan,

What kind of recording support do you expect the Odyssey to offer for the PMW F55? Will there be 4k support? Will there be 4k raw support?

Thanks

Dear Iknuhp,

The Odyssey7Q, with our "4K Uncompressed Recording Option" we will take the Sony F55's full uncompressed HD-SDI 4K output, which comes over the four HD-SDI 1.5G Single Link Outputs (typically used to feed a 4K Monitor) and record it uncompressed.

Sometime later, after we finish the Avid DNxHD codec, we will be working on another very popular codec. Then we will attempt to obtain certification for this other codec.

It is our goal, to then offer the ability to accept 4K uncompressed and record 4K compressed in the other codec.

Please note, for the Sony F55, 4K Raw is not available over the HD-SDI outputs, just 4K compressed.

The Sony R5 recorder, which mates directly to the F5 uses a different interface to the F55 (and not HD-SDI), thus it has access to the 4K Raw output, while we only have access (at least as it stands now) to the 4K uncompressed output over four HD-SDI links.

My statement "(at least as it stands now)" is meant to be a statement of fact, not a hint or preannouncement that we expect this to change soon.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,

Dan Keaton

Note that 4K HD-SDI out is a feature of the F55 but not an available output of the F5. The ONLY 4K output of that camera is to the R5 RAW recorder.
