C200: New Compact-Servo 70-200mm

Hello,

I just received this newly available lens and put it on my C200. It appears Canon has yet to post a firmware upgrade to allow the AF to work on it. In addition, with the new promotion now available for including a free Zoom Grip ZSG-C10, they also need to update the attachment plate for the grip since the one I received does not match up the screw holes to those on the lens. I assume what I received is still left over for the earlier 18-80.

That's strange. I have one coming. It doesn't make any sense that the zoom grip would be different for the 18-80 and the 70-200. It is a standard Arri Rosette.

The grip itself is the same as on the 18-80. It's the lens where the three attachment holes are placed that don't match up with the screws on the attachment plate that connects the grip to the lens.

Hi Dan,

I read your piece and was encouraged to go ahead and buy the lens (not putting any responsibility on you, as I've done much research on this lens.). Now that the lens is actually shipping, things are a bit different. Here's a photo of the grip problem I mentioned. Also, those who buy this lens now will find the auto focus doesn't work with the C200 at this time, as I mentioned earlier. I'm sure Canon will issue a camera firmware update. Not sure when, tho'.loose screw.jpg

This is one of those times where I am completely confused and wondering if you are trying to attach the grip incorrectly. The grip attaches with single screw threaded the rosette mounting point on the servo unit. No screws need to be removed from the servo unit.

You are correct. However, the rosette attachment point is not directly on the lens, but on an included attachment plate you screw onto the lens with three screws. (see attached photo) Canon-ZSG-C10-Hand-Grip-w-tags.jpgThe lens I received has the right screw hole drilled in a lower position, so when I attached the plate to the lens, there was no matching hole for the right screw to line up with, so that's why you see it sticking out. I believe the grip I received (which is a free promo if you buy the lens now) includes an attachment plate for the earlier 18-80 lens. The 70-200 screw holes are placed differently. What Canon has to do is provide the correct mounting plate for this newer lens. As for the AF compatibility with the C200, I spoke with a Canon rep who said they will be announcing a camera firmware update to allow the AF to work with the camera. I shot some video yesterday with the lens and with peaking on had a hard time finding focus as the focus assist feature of the camera also does not work yet with this lens.

the 18-80 that I got cam pre attached with the mounting plate. I did not know the mounting plate could be removed or that the 70-200 would not come with one pre attached.

I got the 70-200 today. You are correct that the third mounting point for the grip plate does not exist on the 70-200mm. I don't actually think the lens needs it, though, and I'm guessing that Canon just expects you to use the mounting plate without the third screw.

My problem is that the mounting plate for my zoom grip actually has the wrong thread size tapped into the center of the Rosette and I can't mount the grip to the lens. Somehow, Canon made a mistake in manufacturing the mounting plate that I received.

Canon told me yesterday that the missing mounting hole was intentionally left off the Compact-Servo 70-200mm lens.

Pre-production models of the 70-200mm lens that were used for demos and photos used to have three mounting holes instead of two.

The Canon ZSG-C10 Zoom Grip Controller can be attached to the lens using the two mounting screws.

Thanks Terry, that is what Canon has advised me. You have to back out the upper right screw and the grip plate mounts fine. Still hoping for a camera firmware update for this lens soon as the AF does not function.

Sorry about that DWay, I tested the 70-200 T4.4 on the C300 MKII and it worked great, I kept the 18-80 on the C200 and it worked fine too. Let us know how you like it once Canon gives you DPAF with it!
