New Comedy Short: Man-Hole

Mark Harris

Pain in the ass
Looking for feedback from the gurus around here. It's sort-of a sex comedy. Overall I am happy with it, save a few little things.

WARNING for those who care: There is cussing and sexual content here. So don't play around your kids.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on this thread,

nothing like watching short films about rectal love in a packed coffee shop.

sick smile on my face...

I think you'll dig our short "The Jesus & Charlie show"

Yeah, I saw your post about it. Going to check it out after I walk the dog. Do you like that Underground Films place? Looking for more venues to show things. I did release this one as a video podcast as well, but always looking for more venues.

They were pretty quick to get it up. Overall I think it's a great place to screen.

Doesn't seem like alot of people are viewing right now, which is dissapointing. But overall, I think it's a great site.

LOL at her speech in the beginning...

and I died about "go go spider web" (still laughing now!)

Dude, that was REALLY funny!

I do gotta say though... wasn't all the crazy about the wrestling scene, or the Jedi line... some places got a little over the top.

But overall, you have a great sense of humor!

Pretty good. Even my girl friend couldn't stop watching it. Ironically she said, "Is that it?" I (we) eagery await the next episode. Curious about the bloody knife thing too.

Thanks for the comments all.

EditPhish, I tend to agree with you about some over the top stuff. It's a weird and very fine line as I keep making comedies. Trying to figure out where over the top is and not really knowing until I see the finished product. I started out doing dramas, but comedy is like 10 times harder to get right.

mikenphx - What we're doing with Man-Hole is, treating it like a TV series. So we will be introducing story threads, like the bloody knife thing as we go. And those will lead to ew storylines.

My main goal this year is to basically shoot one short a month. I recently started DP-ing my own work, and I just want to shoot, shoot, shoot and learn, learn, learn! So I decided to make it like a series, and just keep it going.

I am very interested in constructive criticism about lights and camera. I know I have a lot to learn. In the next one, we will be using the famous Plywood Skater for more camera movement.

We shoot the next episode this week.

I will, of course, post it here, but if you want to get all high-tech, we are offering them as podcasts too. That way, you subscribe in iTunes, and get new ones automatically as they come out.

I thought that the composition of the opening scene was stunning. Like those old PBS spelling shows. What gave you the idea/how did you light that?

Thanks a lot. That is a compliment, right? Anyway, that's just the way I envisioned it from the start. I never like to have naturalistic sex scenes. I just feel like sex ALWAYS takes you out of the story. It does for me anyway. So I like looking for more expressionistic ways of representing it. And that sillouette thing came to mind.

As to the how, it was just a blue light shining on the wall behind the actors. It was the only light in the room. I got the camera pretty close to them, and away they went.

Though, we shot that in one of the actor's bedrooms. His roommate, sleeping in the next room, was awakened by like 2 hours of these loud sex sounds...

I loved the, "go, go spiderweb" reference. What I did not like was the
camera direction between the two wrestlers. I really don't like looking up
people's noses. Blue lighting was a nice touch.

good acting in the wrestling scene... the lighting was good. I'm sure the footage looks alot like 35mm when played on a TV.

Yeah, to be honest with you, as much as I am happy with the writing in the wrestling scene, it is about my least favorate shooting. It was the least planned out. I am usually very strict about storyboarding and in that case I winged it.

I think this is great.

Very adult, risque but great stuff. The only thing I can say is Technically it needs some polishing; photography, editing, sound....

That's not to say its horrible; it is not. I find above average.

The writing is great and the talent are real; and that sells it for me.

Great job! I laughed all the way through. This makes Sex in the City seem PG.

Concentrate on growing those technical areas and expand on locations and atmosphere and you have a winner !

I enjoyed the list of 'what she'd done for him' ;)

Acting pretty good and the friend 'chats' were cool. :) Enjoyed this.

Although, as mikenphx says: "Curious about the bloody knife thing" :S

EDIT: Sorry, had started writing and forgot to 'send', so the above posts got put on whilst this was sitting waiting to be sent.
Did that make sense?

Sick...Twisted....AWESOME. I liked it, a lot. The opening scene had me in stitches, and your use of lighting, music, and editing were a perect comedic combination. Then when she started rattling off her list, I was totally hooked.

I actually thought the wrestling scene was perfectly tongue in cheek. What more interesting of a setting could you have for a discussion of the alleged homosexuality of butt love, than a scene with two nearly naked men rolling all over eachother.

Audio was a bit shaky, but within the realm of fixability. Otherwise, fairly solid production.

Only other downside: I will never look at Crisco the same way again.
