New Class 10 Transcends here

Some other class 10s didn't work but we can keep our fingers crossed on these ones.

Someone needs to test and see if the frame rate can go up a little faster with them than the 40-42 with the class 4-6 cards.

will 60fps s&q ever be possible with an sd card or is the speed limited by the adapter? i have a couple of class 6 transcend cards that i can safely shoot 48fps on but i think i got lucky with those. every card i have bought since then has crapped at 48fps.

i'd be very interested in hearing the test results. i was going to purchase a few SanDisk Extreme cards before the rebate expires at the end of the month, but now the price point of these new Transcend cards has caught my attention.

I don't know that anyone has ever measured the USB throughput on the adapters, or even if they are USB1 or USB2. Or if there are differences from adapter to adapter.

On the other hand if the EX1R can use the expresscard adapters all the way up to 60fps, it doesn't sound like the adapters are the limiting factor.

It may just be the camera software or hardware that is the limiting factor. I'm hoping that it isn't something like the EX1 is USB1 and the EX1R is USB2.

The ones that work with the EX1 are SLC (single layer) construction. The ones that are causing problems are MLC (multiple layers). The SLC format is more expensive. Transcend's literature says the new Video Cards are MLC, so I'm waiting to see if they work for someone else.

Good to know. any idea what cards besides the one you just mentioned are in each category(SLC or MLC)?

also, due to time restraints i think i'm gonna buy some SanDisk Extreme cards before the rebate ends. Does anyone know if i'd gain anything with the Extreme Class 10 card over the Extreme III Class 6 card? they both have a speed rating of 30MB/s. the only real difference i see is the Class ratings. i own/operate an EX1. so, basically would the Class 10 benefit me more than the Class 6 card or is the Class 10 card overkill?

thanks.

Its totally confusing.

As I understand it one big issue is minimum rated writing speed and actual writing speed. The chart on Wiki the class six has a minimum writing speed of 6Mbps. Those class 6 cards on the transcend website are labeled 150x, which on the chart should be 22 Mbps.

This may be why transcend and sandisk cards of lower class ratings will work, while other manufacturer's cards won't.

Unless you care about longevity (SLC are supposed to last longer) I don't see why would you care for hardware details as long as a card matches speed rating you need.

Thanks Michael,
That info seems to match the wiki info on class ratings. I was trying to find more info and found these interesting comments on dvinfo:

"I've been using SanDisk Extreme III 30 MB/sec 16GB and Transcend Class 6 (Green stripe) 16 GB. Transcend Red Stripe are infamous for lower quality, but people have been complaining that new Transcend Green Stripe are a problem as well."

"Transcends have changed their formula. All 4 I bought from Amazon recently I had to send back. I checked with Abel Cine Tech, they looked into it and ended up sending all their transcends back.
Transcends used to be formulated to work just fine. I have 8 older cards that are still going strong.

I bought the new Sandisk 30mbps cards. I get a very fast green light, aprox 4 seconds. As good as SxS cards in that regard. But they are about $100 a piece."

NOTE: THESE ARE NOT COMMENTS ABOUT THE NEW TRANSCEND CLASS 10 CARDS. I'd still like to see test results of the Transcent Class 10 cards.

i just did a little research of my own on Transcend's website and it appears that the "red stripe" Transcend cards we've been having so much trouble with are MLC. The "red stripe" cards i assume are the "newer" cards because that's the card pictured on their website right now and almost every retailer's website has a picture of a "red stripe" card. this must mean that the "blue stripe, older???" cards are SLC.

does anyone know if the new Class 10 cards are SLC? i'm gonna email them(Transcend) tonight, but somebody might already know.

The on-line image is red stripe, but it would sure be nice if they labeled their products.

yeah, but as of right now the only Transcend "red stripe" card we need to avoid is the 16GB Class 6 one. still waiting from Transcend to confirm if this card is SLC or MLC. if you run a Google search for "SLC SDHC" and click the Shopping link/tab and the top of the search results you'll see a lot of Transcend "blue stripe" Class 6 cards.

time's running out for me. i've got 3 days to decide if i'm gonna take a chance on this card or cough up the extra dough and purchase an Extreme or Extreme III card.

Transcend, in an email to me, has just confirmed that the TS16GSDHC10 (16GB Class 10) and TS16GSDHC6V (HD Video Class 6) are MLC.
