New Cinematography Reel

Just threw this together today. Most of it is 7d footage but there's a good amount of my old hvx200 in there as well.

Music is "Where the Wild Things Are" by Patrick Watson.

Input greatly appreciated as usual.

Thanks. Yeah it is the 7d, handheld too. Actually just about all of my 7d footage on this reel is handheld with a Z-Finder. I don't notice any problems until I go past 50mm.

Superb work! My only suggestion would be to remove the guitar shot. My initial reaction to seeing it was that it belonged in a music-promo reel....and I was then expecting to see more music promo stuff. Otherwise it is all absolutely beautiful work, superbly cut and left me wanting to see more.

Thanks! Do you mean remove all guitar shots or just some of them?

I think you might be right also from the standpoint that there might be a little too much black and white footage towards the beginning of my reel.

I was thinking remove all the guitar shots. The cutting is pretty rapid there too which may have something to do with it sticking out. The black+white elements of your reel are great. It is as important and valid as any colour footage you have.

I would suggest that you cut a reel that is around 90 seconds long. It would be good for you to be really brutal and set yourself the task of taking the 2:30+ of stuff you have and chopping off a minute. I did the same thing and was amazed how tight and impactful I was able to get it.

Directors/producers having to watch dozens of reels will be happy to see shorter ones.

Take out all of the soft shots! There's too many for a reel (1 is too many) and none of them look like they're purposely soft.

You do have some good stuff, in particular there was one shot that last for only a moment that looked great...the one with the guy at the christmas tree. Wish I could have seen more of that. Also, I really liked the really wide shot of the guy out at the beach. Definitely one shot that told a story.

Really just make it a minute shorter and you'll be good.

What shots are soft? Some of them are certainly lower res ... About 30 percent of the reel is at 720X405 res .h264 and I'm trying to get my hands on the original dvcprohd files. Could that be what you're referring to?

After reading that comment about "soft shots" I had to watch it again. I don't see anything that I would class as being soft!

:35 seconds. This one might just be lower resolution, it just didn't feel very sharp in comparison. Maybe it's the movement as well?

At 46 you're focused on her shirt...this one isn't really that bad, but her eyelashes don't help.

There is one at 51, where the guy is coming out of the doorway.

The overlay at :54 goes slightly soft.

At 1:54, the woman is definitely soft on the second shot. It's just a glimpse, but when I saw the shot that's what I noticed.

2:09 is a bit of a different problem, since you can see you or your ac searching for focus, but it's the same idea....I guess along with the other clip it could be okay, since you threw them out of focus when they ran away.

Not all of these are that big of a deal...but the ones that stuck out were 2:09, 1:54, and :51

I mean, these are all being pretty critical, but I'm an AC and I just can't help but notice these things.
