New Card reader ready for shipping

I've ordered a couple also. They are going to do great business.

I have a couple of 8GB SxS cards for overcranking, etc. Combined with these MxR (and a handful of SDHC cards) my memory needs will be completely met.

SDHC really improves the value proposition of the EX1. Gotta love it!

Man, I wish I would've known about this stuff before I got my laptop for field dumping... it's cheaper and much lighter to just buy a zeeeellion SD cards!

So, is this one the "ultimate" non-SxS solution? It seems the others had some sort of issues or availability concerns so I haven't bitten yet.

It's my understanding that one has been designed specifically for EX1 / EX3 compatibility.

I'm wondering if/when we'll get a 32GB SDHC card that plays nice with it? :D

My concern for this one is it will have the same probllem that seems to afflict some Delkins. Both share the use of the push mount/push eject, and while this one pretty much overcomes the accidental ejection it remains to be seen if the mount itself is reliable. It appears the push/eject mount of the Delkins causes a number of the reliability problems.

It happended to me with my Delkin today, it reported media error after turning on the camera with a known good card. Reseat the SD card and it was ok but the problem still occured, I switched back to Kensingtons even if I had to leave the door open. Shot all day and night in KxS without a single issue (4 hours of recording).

We'll know soon enough, there will be enough people testing them out. I don't have any to test though so can't accurately report them as even functional on my site.

I've had the same problem with my Delkin. The push mount / push eject is very unreliable and prone to failure. Now my Delkin is locked into "constant eject" mode, and won't retain an SDHC card at all.

Actually, this makes a good argument for using only ONE SDHC card per adapter. It's probably best to seat an SDHC card once, and then never remove it, than to continually stress the design by inserting & removing multiple cards.

Perhaps version 2.0 of these adapters will switch to a different eject mechanism design.

I have a Delkin Card and have not had any reliability issues, after working out a quirk. I had ordered 2 Delkins but one arrived DOA. My remaining card works very well. The quirk is when putting a SD card in you have to hold the adapter by the edges, if you insert the card in while holding on the long sides the contacts don't mate properly and you get an error when putting into the camera. A pretty simple thing to do. I have shot about 8-10 hours on each of my 5 cards in a week and have had the issue only 3 times, most when I was performing my initial testing last weekend. On my shoot this week no problems at all. I am really happy and can't wait to get new cards from Ross.

I hope his cards don't have this problem as it would be an unreliable solution for most if it does. You don't have to worry about holding the card in a special way when inserting it with the Kensington, it just works every time. To be 'the' solution it needs to as reliable as the Kensington with the benefit of flush mounting.

ok guys, I am late in the game here so let me get this straight, today there is a new way for starage for the ex1? so the sony cards have an cheap alternative? wow how is this working out so far?

Hi Zeke,

Thanks for your post. Dang it you are absolutely right!

It is supposed to say 1 x Expresscard $35 + Postage and Inisurance $15 = $50.

When we were designing the page we couldn't get it all in and we had to concatenate some things, and this was one. I will go back and make that clearer. I wouldn't pay $50 insurance on a $35 card either.

Sorry for the confusion. I must talk to that dang web designer....

Thanks for clearing that up:dankk2:

I am still not totally convinced the Kensingtons are out of the picture. When Expansys rang about my backorder they mentioned something about a Sony embargo or something on the Kensington adaptors. I didn't press on that comment with them but found it interesting they mentioned it at all. They then mentioned they were expecting another shipment in the start of 09.

Now lets consider this. These cards will not be shipping by sea freight. So for Expansys to recieve a shipment from Kensington about a week ago, they could have only shipped from Kensington about a week before that. So about 2 weeks ago, Kensington shipped the adaptors to one of their distributors. Does that sound like a discontinued product?

If there was some shonky dealings between Sony and Kensington over their card, perhaps now they have ended as they have seen that there will always be some other alternative options around, optimal form factor or not (from $12 off eBay), what is the point of stopping Kensington producing their cards? The preverbial cat is out of the bag, and the horse has bolted too boot!

I'm thinking the Kensingtons are the ultimate solution for the EX3 camera.

frisco
i don't think so, first of because they are "discontinued", I guess kensington made a deal with Sony, or vice versa;
and second - you can't close the door with kensington, unless you cut the card, and I already lost 2x16 after I cut em, but forget the cards, I lost the data, and I can't afford that,
but maybe I'm missing smthng, why do you think Kensington is the ultimate SxS replacement?
