Canon Compact-Servo 18-80mm lens on the JVC GY-LS300 camera using a Metabones EF to Micro Four Thirds adapter.

Servo controls worked, but Auto Focus and Auto Iris were not functional.

Do you think we can assume the 18-80 servo lens will perform similarly on the new GH5 attached with a metabones ultra? I am primarily interested in a functional servo. It would be great if the lens IS worked as well. The auto focus/iris are less necessary. Thoughts?

I'll be able to test this out on Monday when my lens arrives. I'll report back with my findings.

I received my 18-80mm lens over the weekend. I attached it to my Canon C300 (w/ DPAF update). The lens works and looks great. Auto focus seems to work better on this lens than it does on my Canon photo lenses. No scientific evidence to support this, but AF seems more responsive with this lens (even in low light). Having a parfocal lens is wonderful. I also love that I can change the iris smoothly without steps.

I also attached it to my Canon 1D C. The lens covers the 4K mode and all Super 35 modes without any vignetting. It does not cover full frame video modes. I had to zoom in to roughly 50mm before I didn't see any vignetting in full frame. I knew that the lens didn't cover full frame when I purchased it, but I figured I would take a look anyway.

As expected, the auto iris and auto focus controls on the lens do not function on the 1D C.

Great to hear this. Many thanks

Does the lens lose light transmission when zooming stopped down?

Has anybody else used this lens? I'm still wondering whether the lens loses light transmission when zooming while stopped down. Also, is the zoom controller nice and smooth or does it abruptly start and stop? How is the IS?

I guess that I should just rent it.

What???! lol
Man... and here I was thinking this may be a possibility to use on my FS7 (without the autofocus of course)... but it doesn't even work how you'd expect on a Canon?? Yikes... :/

If you own a Sony Fs7 you'd be much better off with the Sony 18-110mm. Not only is it a good $1500 lower in price but you don't have to use a lens adapter which, by nature, can introduce flaring. And you get that extra 80-110mm. I suppose if you own Canon L primes or a Canon 70-200mm it would make sense to pick up the Canon 18-80mm so that your lenses more match in color reproduction. But I can't see much reason beyond that. The Sony zoom will operate from the zoom toggle on the Sony handgrip, I'm not sure if this Canon will.

Some have expressed shock at the price of the Canon 18-80, and while it isn't an apples to apples comparison, consider that the new Zeiss 20-100 is $10k. And it isn't even a servo lens. The Canon 17-120 ( again, not apples to apples and a lens in another class ) is a whopping $32k. $5k-ish isn't unreasonable for a Canon owner to get into the s35 servo zoom game. Once you use a par-focal servo zoom you'll never want to go back to the nightmare that is Stills glass. It should never have been adopted by the video world in the first place. It is all Canon's fault to begin with and it is about time they made attempt at rectifying what they done did.

I rented the 18-80 for a run and gun shoot this past week and the focal length range was PERFECT. I have a gig coming up that requires a Jimmy Jib so I took the opportunity to test it last night. Looks like the gears are just wide enough to match up to the iris and focus! Servo control we're going to use with the 20-pin Canon remote cable (ran all the way to the jib-op controls). Really happy this lens works with less support than the 17-120!

For reference, this is what the 17-120 looked like:

Well, to be fair and if you're really worried about having extra stuff attached, if you have compatible controls and 20-pin cables, you don't need ANY external gears or motors to control the 17-120. Complete FIZ control is easliy possible through the grip.

Interested in this 18-80 lens for my C100 II for run and gun (and RED and shortly the GH5). Looks pretty solid for the price, and like the range.

One thing is keeping me from buying. I shoot DSLR style, cradling lens with my left hand with right on the grip. It seems as though the servo stuff on bottom would get in the way of holding the lens that way.

Can anyone who has used it provide feedback & thoughts?

When I was running and gunning with it this past week, I actually took the servo grip off with my C100 MKII. Without a baseplate, the servo grip cable was in the way when trying to slide the camera on a monopod. Then I thought, okay I'll use this universal Zacuto baseplate to raise it up...except the servo grip knocked into the baseplate when trying to mount on the camera (I could mount the lens THEN mount the baseplate, but I wasn't going to do that if I had to change lenses). Anyway, I shot with manual zoom and focus so I could rack and keep my left hand on the lens (and right hand on the c100 grip).

Our clients would pay an extra $100.00 to $150.00 for this lens. All I would need to do is shoot a pretty demo interview with slow, smooth creep in and creep out with the servo.

Ours arrived today and I immediately put it on our C100 mk ii. Love this lens. Hope to have some footage uploaded soon. Also put it on our 1DC, covers 4K and S35 without any issues that I could see during a quick test. Planning a day as well to shoot some 4K on the 1DC with the lens.

Very nice, you'll love the lens. Now it's time to upgrade your tripod head, you are quite overloaded for an ACE.

True that lol. I've got my original O'Connor 50 from 30 years ago that I've been waiting to be refurbished, maybe it's time. :)

My Film School tripod head, the O'Connor 50, that thing is a beast! You have a young camera assistant to lug it around for you? ;-)
