C100: New Canon Cine-Servo 18-80mm EF Lens Announced $5225 Pre-Orders @Texas Media Systems

Overpriced as usual. Get real Canon....about 0000.1% of the population can afford such luxuries...
Because 99,9% of the population are not in the video/cinema business or just don't NEED this lens. A question here...Should Canon sell every lens 1$ so that everyone could afford one?
If you can't afford it, it's because it's not for you or you can't justify the cost with the kind of work you do.

Wow! This is exactly what I need. I am just a couple of years from retiring and not wanting to pour any more dough down the gear hole but I am bidding on a doc series for later in the summer and if I got it I felt I'd have to buy the 17-55 for $780 because that's my sweetness range. My problem is I swap lenses constantly and that puts a lot of wear and tear on them and I miss a LOT of shots, even though I change fast. Also, one of these days a punk is going to run off with the lens bag, Chicago Style.

A couple of months ago I was out of town and my 70-200 got stuck on my camera and bricked it. Had to rent and Canon later said I had put too much wear and tear on the butt and one of the four screws had backed out. Abel calls it "over use". So...having a servo in this range would be great! That is the only reason I have kept my HPX300, so I could smoothly follow something. It's not too fast but most of my work is not in the mud.

I end up shooting a lot of "performances", even if it's a speaker pacing a stage and that has always forced me back into using the ENG camera, I'm afraid to bring a stills lens camera because if I have to re-compose there's a jerk the editor has to cut around, so this will fit my needs perfectly. I power my Frankenrig with a AB batt so that will work.

Now I have to sell the HPX300 battle axe, avoid buying the 17-55 and see if Canon has monthly terms?

This lens is impressive. Perfect range for docu-shooters w/a servo zoom and no light loss, plus IS. Waiting for the right project, but I'm definitely interested in purchasing one. Would be a killer package deal if/when they release the C100 Mk3 this fall.

+1

I just pre-ordered the lens. It looks amazing for the way I work. Smaller and lighter than the Canon 17-120, and with IS and from what I've heard perhaps faster auto-focus. I often shoot at f/4-f/8. Outside during the day you've got plenty of light, and inside I often use lights and like the look of f/4-f/8. Can always slap on a prime when needed for lower light or shallower depth of field.

On another note, when is someone going to warn and if not heeded ban lovecameras for doing nothing but posting negative comments on the forum which keep getting down voted? He's trolling the forum.

So many negative votes in many threads .... I am sure lovecameras will get the message loud and clear.

The Canon Compact-Servo Lens felt pretty good when mounted to the Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K Camera.

The Canon ZSG-C10 Control Unit Grip was easily moved from the lens to the Blackmagic arm.

I always LOVE these types of posts. Usually from amateurs, hobbyists or non-professionals(or those working at the bottom-feeder level). Now personally, I don't consider this a professional lens, but it's not intended for the general population. It's a specialized piece of equipment.

If you think this lens is expensive, you will never make it working in this business. But judging by your post, you don't WORK in this business.

I always LOVE these type of posts. I bet the lens we're talking about is too small to ingest your enormous ego.

anyway, better that to tell to other members of this forum if they even are relevant or not to even talk about this lens because they don't get paid enough to afford it (I can't, but I mostly rent)(and don't misjudge me I AM in the business...) maybe we should only talk about the lens.

I just got out of a documentary using FS7 + Canon 17-120 ...amazing lens...a bit disappointed by the loss of light in the long end, but optically it was just impressive. My b-cam was FS5 with sony's 18-105 and it was just a joke.

Hope this new 18-80 stands not too far from the 17-120 (even if its fourth of the price).

Slow down...Run&gun has a point. Lovecamera was talking about the lens like it was an hamburger (everyone should afford one...if not, then it's probably too expensive). For sure 99,9% of the population can't afford (or justify the purchase) this lens...it's a specialized tool for specialized market.

totally agree with you.

but saying "you will never make it working in this business. But judging by your post, you don't WORK in this business" is totally disrespectful, and also, we don't know the man, let's not make judgments of value by reading a few words.
If indeed the man is not in the business (that doesn't
even mean anything, this business has so many forms...), he still have the right to give his opinion without being disregarded.

You make a point too :)

After watching that Canon video, I am much more excited about this lens. If this lens was a 2.8 lens, it would be too huge and expensive. WIth any of the EOS Cinema cameras, operating at F4/T4.4 is going to be fine. For episodic television and and or docs, this lens is going to be amazing, I will definitely be renting it and will buy a few of them if any of our shows are actually sold. Just shooting sizzles and pitch reels for now. I am leaving for a shoot in Africa next week, really wish this was available now for rental, it would be perfect for this shoot.

My latest info on arrival is still around Sept 1st....we have a lot on order and 1 of our shows is looking at getting 8 of them...and they have to have them by mid-September...so we'll see. Also, we plan on putting a few in rentals right away.
If you want to get one, I'd strongly suggest you place a pre-order with Terry...or us at EVS (which is closer to you)....

Coutard, make no mistake, none of us want to spend exorbitant amounts of money on gear just for the hell of it and price doesn't necessarily reflect performance and just because you use expensive gear doesn't mean you're talented of better than the next guy, BUT as was pointed out, LovesCameras was talking about specialized gear meant for professionals as if it was supposed to be something that you could just run in to Best Buy and pick-up for a few hundred bucks. It's not. And my comment about him not working in the business was not a comment on his talent, but more an observation that he probably doesn't IF the prices of (relatively) cheap gear seem that outrageous to him, because most people working in the industry KNOW that it's not cheap to do this. I remember when an SD camera cost more than two average automobiles sitting in someones driveway and guys would take out six-figure loans just to buy a basic SD camera package. Now you can get cameras capable of things we couldn't even dream of back then for a FRACTION of that. I guess it's all about perspective, and his comments tell me his perspective is from that of someone that is not doing this for a living. Again, not a reflection on his talent.
