New Camera Release at NAB

Panasonic is going to release a new camera that will be smaller and slightly cheaper than the HMC150 at NAB next week. I don't have many details, but it may end up being a good companion to the HMC150.

Who is going to NAB? I would like to know more about this new camera.

Mark: Interesting!! Same image characteristics as the HMC? Same 3CCD setup? I'm all for smaller and lighter cameras... provided the image quality is retained of course.

matt: I had to google up the DVC30 and realized that I had totally forgotten about that cam! Too bad it didn't have 24P.. if Panasonic comes out something like the DVC30 but retaining all of the image characteristics of the HMC.. then it would be a perfect event cam. That is, if they also fix the lens issue that is plaguing the hPX170 and HMC150...

They discontinued the little palmcorder HSC1U, so are you thinking that maybe there'll be a replacement for that in the lineup? Like an AVCCAM version of the SD9 or something?

I sure miss my AG-DVC30 - one of Panasonic's most under-rated cameras ever. If they make something like that, with a longer zoom... I'm all over it.

My guess, if this is true, is that a 3-CCD AVCHD cam likely will not have 1/3 inch chips.

Otherwise, you cannibalize 150 sales.

Take out XLR audio, waveform monitor, different lens, and that could represent a new model.

Honestly.. I think Panasonic's product folks screwed up with the HMC. They should have put 2 SD slots in the Cam.. it wouldn't have cannibalized HPX sales because the other aspects of the camera is too different. If they put 2 SD slots in the HMC, then they could have put out a lower priced 1/3" 3CCD cam without XLR audio, no waveform, and only 1 SD slot. Price it approriately and HMC owners will snatch up these lower priced models as B cams, or backups...

Well, it any case if the rumor is true, this would be interesting.

Of course, we also might even see a CMOS or 3MOS chip array

Oooh, that's probably pretty close, a DVC30 replacement... right now the AVCCAM lineup looks like an HD version of the DV ProLine lineup, so a DVC30 replacement would make a lot of sense. DVC30 was 1/4"; I don't think Panasonic has an HD 1/4" CCD chipset so maybe a DVC30 replacement would be CMOS?

I still use the DVC30 as a B cam for the DVX100 and think it a great camera. In the right light it's hard to tell the DVX from the DVC - 20x zoom, optional XLR, manual controls( though not as easy as the 100) No 24P but I shoot 30P and can use a shutter speed of 1/30 and Scene file Movie-Like with frame turned on gives me the progressive look. I'm all in for a scaled down HMC HD cam.

I'd prefer a striped down 150 instead of a gussied up DVC30.

If they yank out the XLR's and a few other things, but keep the low light performance, they'd be great to use as additional cameras for weddings.

Seems like a good thread to post this question:

Does anyone have any thoughts on a small consumer cam that could "jive" with the HMC 150? I really like the specs and price on the the Panasonic HDC-SD9 but it's lacking a mic jack and the ability to go wireless is important in my work...thanks for thoughts on this.

Mark:

What's your source?

I can't reveal my source, but it is someone who is in the "know". I do not have any specs on the camera and they didn't ask me for any input. Can you believe that!

Same chips in a smaller body without XLR would be great. I really don't think it is going to be a really small single chip consumer camera because the price point should be around $1000 less than the HMC150.

They will release it at their press release on Sunday at NAB. Who will be there?

Their "300" series of high end consumer cams has the 1/4" 3MOS array. If they could improve slightly on those, it would be pretty good. Camcorderinfo.com is giving the TM300 some praise for its abilities. It appears that it is better overall than the new Sony's and Canon's. That camera is $1,300 I think, so maybe this new cam will be in the $2,000-$2,500 range comfortably.

I too am smelling a direct head to head with the GY-HM100 but for much MUCH cheaper. Bring it on Panny!

Ditto on missing the DVC30, Vox. The image was great for a small 1/4" cam, and it paired nicely with a DVC80 or DVX. The only drawback was the cable on the optional XLR adapter: it made things difficult to put the cam in a case with the cable plugged in. Other than that, the DVC30 was a camera which was discontinued a bit too soon.

If, however, there's the possibility of something being announced which is similar to the DVC30 - and in AVCCAM format - well.... I'd be all over it in a heartbeat to use as a B cam to the HMC150.
