New camera - first query

Hi All - first post here, though I have been lurking for a considerable time...

I've been watching with considerable interest the various opinions flying back and forth about the HPX300 series these last few months. Having absorbed all the information and roadtested it against an EX3 I now find myself the proud owner of a gleaming (well, ex-demo) HPX301 and am looking forward to getting to grips with it in due course. Many thanks to all who have participated in the debate because you have collectively helped influence the decision of what to go for.

So, back to my camera. All lovely, bar one thing: The viewfinder. the eyepiece is so stiff to swivel up and down, I fear that I am going to snap it every time I try and move it. Moving the eyepiece actually causes the whole viewfinder to flex slightly, so I can only move it if I am actually holding the main part of the viewfinder with my other hand to protect it. This means I can't adjust it with one hand, which is seriously inconvenient.

In addition, it makes a rattling sound when you move the camera from side to side. The viewfinder is tightly locked in place, the rattle seems to come from within the eyepiece.

Is this normal? I can find no other references (bar one - a post some time back referring to a pre-production camera having a very stiff viewfinder).

Would like to know whether this is a common issue before I go back to the dealer.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed.

Simon

Yes the viewfinders are quite stiff when new but I havent heard of the rattling problem, best get it checked out just in case.

The stiffly moving viewfinder issue appears to inherent in its design. As for the rattle, I've heard it as well on two different brand-new cameras that had just been removed from sealed boxes including my own,so, that makes 3. The noise that I am referring to appears to be coming from within the viewfinder and IMO can be likened to the sound of a loose piece of glass moving back and forth within its carrier but could easily be due to some other moving element (I've heard the same sound when shaking a round filter that is loose within its carrier). Others might not have noticed it as it only becomes apparent in a quiet room when the camera is held close and moved from side- to- side in the lateral plane... however, it doesn't appear to have any influence on function.

The prototype I used last year had the same, I wouldn't worry about it. It will loosen up as far as the stiffness with use and as long as everything is working okay, I think you are fine.

housefull - the VF loosens up with use. Just be cautious (as it sounds like you are) until this happens. Took a few weeks for mine to do so (using several times a week).
