New camera April 5th?

I always thought of the GF1 as one of those camera's I could buy, take to to Europe when I'm on vacation and take some video when I'm inspired by the amazing vista's I see. Instead of lugging around my AF100 or a future GH2.

Does that make any sense to anyone? I mean, we all can't be like Philip Bloom and have 12 bags of DSLR kit brought with us on every trip. The wife would kill me if I did this on vacation!

The suspense is killing me. I'd really like a low cost camcorder body with mic in and headphone out, with Gh2 quality would be plenty for me. EVF, ideally pivoting as well as screen, full manual control. It would be nice if it had the 1:1 crop so I could play with my 16mm lenses as well. Proper wysiwyg viewing with zebras please. consumer vg20 class seem possible.

Hadn't really given much thought to it, but the disappearance of the 14-140 kits could mean a stockpiling of lenses to go with such a camera. A consumer market camcorder would have to have a 10x zoom available to be viable.

If the 12-35 2.8 comes out this summer in advance of the GH3, that could be the premium GH2 kit lens until the change over.

Whoa! Anyone else notice how the GH2 just dropped in price OVERNIGHT?

The GH2 (WITH 14-42mm lens) is now $749 from all the big sellers. WITH LENS!!!

(I almost bought a body-only at B&H on Monday for $899!!)

I'm desperately hoping for a serious big brother to the AF100. Something that can take on and beat the F3 if only so that Panasonic and even the AF100 by association get taken seriously again. Australia is sadly a Sony town so using Panasonic can be a drawback some times but mostly the issues I face is that people think the AF100 is not up to the job so I really want Panasonic to make something that people start talking about again. Like when people used to call me up wanting to shoot on the HVX202 every one loved that thing :)

I certainly hope that Panasonic would be aiming to beat a hypothetical Sony F5... the F3 was announced around a year and a half ago! I'm sure there is an F5 coming... to be "A-cam" to the F3 like FS700 is to FS100. Or B-cam to F65, etc.

IMHO, Panasonic needs to release an AF200 (based on GH2 sensor) plus AF500 (4K sensor) ASAP.

wow tough tough spec for panny to beat.
features they MUST do.

avc-ultra for 4k - external 3g hd-sdi i guess.. internal recording would probably too expensive.
avc long-g 10 bit 4:2:2 50mbps for the highpeed slow mo or regular video - KEY
DR 11 - 12+ stops
resolution close to c300
useful features like magnify, peaking, etc
I'm hearing rumors saying that they are ONE company now..

Adding to the line up instead of replacing the AF-100 would be in line with Sony and Canon. I don’t think the FS100 will be discontinued. I watched a promo video from Sony and the testimonials where saying that the FS700 is a great main cam with the FS100 as a B-cam. Intresting.

Panasonic has to announce a 4K product, now that it's the only company without one. They announced a codec supporting high-quality 4K nearly a year ago, when no one but Red and CineForm had anything. But a codec only they will use without a product using it is pointless. So I expect something at NAB.

I think people here claiming Panasonic needs to release a 4K camera are totally jumping the gun. First, the FS700 isn't even out yet. Second, when the FS700 is available, you won't be able to shoot 4K with it. In fact, there's no timeline at all for when you'll be able to shoot 4K with it. And finally, how do you know the 4K out of the FS700 won't be the visual equivalent of using Instant HD to take your 1080p footage and turn it into 4K?

I believe the FS700 has a 4K sensor. At least that's what the Sony video claims.

"k" is the 'megapixel' for the pro market. Hype. Wasn't it just last year that Sony was hyping large pixels and just the right oversampling for 1080p. The AF100 was bad because it used a roughly 12Mp sensor, with an olpf tuned to 1080. Isn't that the same as Red 4k? This year canon comes out with an 8Mp oversampled sensor, and sony follows suit so this is suddenly the only way to do it. Well Panasonic has an 4K oversampled sensor as well, just a different way of reading it, the process of which is not fully known, so they could just as well hype the same stuff if they wanted.

There was this big argument about photosites vs. pixels, and the fact that no one discloses actual numbers, only effective numbers. Its all a bunch of BS to sell new cameras and make you feel bad about the old ones.

They have already proven that a 16MP consumer sensor can be effectively downsampled to 1080 in the GH2, with a more powerful processing engine it could easily work in the 4k realm.

Oh... believe me, they will, they certainly will. It is the future and it is here. Nothing happens before its time and 4k's time is here. Panasonic doesn't need to release a 4K, they have to. Anybody who can't understand that is not very much fully knowledgeable about this business.

Well, sure I do agree that Panasonic could release an AF200 that shot 4:2:2 60p to a decent codec, using the GH2 sensor...

Although to be honest, I'd be a bit scared to buy one unless they said loudly "AS CRISP AS A GH2!" in the marketing :) Mainly because they have been advertising the AF100 as a "Full HD 1080p" camera, when it resolves approx 800p in terms of luma resolution even if you use uncompressed outputs.

Even the GH2 has aliasing / resolution issues... it's not quite 1080p but because it has slight aliasing, it looks crisp like 1080p.

Also, if they make an AF200 which is actually sharp, what the heck are their marketing dept going to say? "For Real True Full HD 1080p"? Nah, I can see the guys saying "ah screw it, that'll never sell. DO 4K!"

Until the FS700, I'd given up on someone producing something sub-$10,000 that shoots pixel-for-pixel sharp 1080p. And the only reason we're getting this is because it's downsampled 4K and they are marketing it as such!

And finally, how do you know the 4K out of the FS700 won't be the visual equivalent of using Instant HD to take your 1080p footage and turn it into 4K?

I will bet you a beer :)

Yep just like 3d was the future... just riddle me this, what the hell is everybody going to watch all this 4k footage on and who's going to broadcast it? especially when the likes of the bbc and nhk are testing 8k, not 4k for next generation broadcast. 4k is a 35mm film replacement not a hd video replacement, i just feel sorry for all the people not working in feature films who get suckered by the manufacturers into feeling they "need" this new gear to replace perfectly good 1080p cameras.
