New Cam Decision Time

if you buy a new 170 you still will have to spend money on top of that for cards. how many cards you need will depend on what kind of shooting you're doing. not sure about the warranty transfer thing, but what's the policy on if you need to send it to Panasonic for a warranty issue? Meaning, if you bought it from a guy, then you get an issue where your warranty covers it, when you send it in would you not be able to contact the original seller and have them as a backup in the event Panasonic wants to confirm ownership? I don't know, just spitballing ideas. If it's a crime punishable by death then disregard. It really all depends on your budget and how much you're trying to spend though.

422 color space for broadcast acceptability
thats horsecrap. unless you are delivering to big time, first run channels, (or your specific venue has their own specific set of rules) about anything can be broadcastable...

as others have said, p2 is more reliable. If you google p2 failure you'll get a lot of people asking about it and few cases of user error, but no one talking about failures. If you Google the same about the 150 with sd cards you will find tons of failure reports. If the event can only be taped once, IMO SD is not and option. For archiving, (1) 500gb external drive cost less then 100 bucks. For name brand SD you will be paying at least $50/ 32 GB. That cost 781 dollars or 7.8 times the archive cost for 500 gb. If your worried about a spindle drive failing buy 2. An external hard drive could actually take less space then all those sd cards in cases and will be a lot harder to loose. Another archive method is DVD. If you archive to dvd you can get disks for as little as $0.07/gig which would cost $35 bucks for 500 gb. As you can see archiving using SD is one of the most expensive methods. As for the initial cost of p2, thats the price you pay for a reliable medium. Over it's life it will be much cheaper then tape. Yes it is more expensive then SD, but IMO it's reliability far out ways the cost.

Now, the 170 vs the 150.
I'v never used the 150 but can tell you the 170 is a great camera. It does not do perfect in low light, but i think other users exaggerate how bad it does. It is a lot better then the 200 (not 200a). For long event you can always use a firestore. The firestore is not 100% reliable but when i tape event i leave p2 in the cam. Basically the p2 loop records so if the firestore ever stops the p2 is recording the last part. Int he long run investing in p2 is worth it. if you have a second person you can continuously offload your p2 into a computer using 2 cards. While one is recording the other is dumping. Using this method your only limited by the laptops hard drive.
