This may sound stupid to some of you A1 owners who read manuals (manuals? We don't need no stinking manuals!).
I got a new battery from bestbatt.com (Product # BBBP-970G). It's a BP-970 clone form China and it was $68 in case anyone is interested. It fits in the A1 battery housing perfectly. I tried it for fit before I charged it.
So, I also bought the $19.50 traveling charger form bestbatt.com. It's really compact and light and has a flip out plug for AC and an adapter for car charging. I plugged it in and charged the new battery until the red light turned green (not what was described in the instructions, by the way), then I took the new battery and put it in my A1 to see if it read full charge on the indicator.
I turned the A1 selector to A.....nothing. OK. I pulled the battery and put it in again....nothing. So I got my Canon original battery and put it in. NOTHING!!! OK. I'm mildly freaking out by now. Did my A1 die overnight? I just used it last night and put it back in it's Pelican. Then I thought, "This can't be real." and started checking every switch. The "Lock" lever (around the "Record" button was flipped to "Lock." End of problem. I know that if that lever is flipped while you have the camera turned on, it just goes into standby. I didn't know that if it is flipped while the camera is off, the camera will NOT turn on; of course until you flip the lever back.
I know. What a dummy.
Anyway, the battery works if anyone is interested. I'll give performance data as soon as I have it.
