New Avid MC Interface Revealed

Avid is showing off their new interface to their upcoming Media Composer. Also added is 64 bit support, new DNxHD codec, ability to work in higher resoultion then 4k, and support for AJA, Blackmagic, Bluefish I/O. Should be interesting, since they are really trying to grab the editors who have abandoned FCP. Photos and videos here: http://www.fliquesosman.com/?p=688

My next editor. The only problem I have is with price. I don't see myself using MC 5.5 vs FCP7 now, so I don't feel like coming out with 995$ to buy it, but how much will 6 cost? Will it be worth it to buy 5.5 and expect a good deal for a 5.5 to 6 upgrade, or simply wait for 6 and expect a good deal then?

Expect a price around 495$ to upgrade to MC 6.0.

It may be less because you would have MC5.5 instead of pre 5.5 versions.

I would say that Avid is bringing the sexy back, but let's face it…Avid has never been sexy. :D
But do you need sexy to be efficient?:D

On the serious side, this sounds very promising. More openness towards third-party developers. Almost started to "dream" about the possible upcoming of new rumored 16 core macpros....and new MC6 :)

This is how you update software! Ya hear that Apple! As they did with Protools 7 to 8, keep the general layout the same, update some of the GUI, maybe alter the color scheme a bit (make it darker, more contrast) And a bunch of under the hood improvements. No need to scrap everything and start over. (can ya tell I'm still bitter about the whole thing?)
I haven't been a fan of Avid since I've been with FCP, but I think it's time to get reacquainted. :)

Def will be abandoning FCP 6 and going with this guy when it comes out. Some re-training time is in order here.

If you have the money now, buy it now. It's $995 if you own a FCP license. In a month the promotion will end and the software will be $2,500 again. Better buy now, learn/relearn the interface, then upgrade to 6 when it's released (no release date has been said, so it may well be a year away).
