NEW ADAPTER: Redrock M2 Encore

I'm really liking this ability to upgrade. I think I'm going to go with the original M2/encore upgrade, then go for the micro X/encore upgrade later down the road. Basically a whole new setup for a little over $1,000, gotta love it!

Im reading it says m2 is upgradable to m2 encore etc but I still don't understand if the upgrade means new components like most of us went through when we upgraded to cine lens or does the upgrade to new m2 mean new box, the whole enchilada.

Edit; I just read at the RR forum that upgrading the old m2 means you upgrade the components ( the guts ). Cost 545.00.

Hi folks

The catalog continues to be updated, so if we mention something that isn't there yet, it will be as we roll it out.

The M2 Encore (we refer to it as M2e) catalog area can be found here:

Regarding other adapters, the M2 has been a rotating screen since the beginning, so I don't know how that makes us the clone :) But adapters are all headed in the same basic direction. We certainly added some new features such as Live Lens and internal mattes that no one else has.

As we all see the basic adapter features start to standardize across all available options, the new selection criteria is quickly becoming price and quality. We wanted to make sure we delivered a product that was affordable (both for M2 owners and new shooters) and didn't skimp on quality or feature set.

Aside from the new features, we think our enhancements around build quality (glue-free assembly, completely gasketed enclosure, internal shock mounts, silent operation, cleaning port, etc.) put Redrock at the head of the pack in this regard. If you've ever had an adapter fail on you during production, you will really appreciate Redrock build quality.

The additional enhancements we couldn't fit into the release can be found in a followup post here:

McVideo - the upgrade for M2 owners is two components: the collimating lens mount, and the lid which includes all new M2e internals. You just pull off the old lid, replace the mount with the collimating mount, insert the new lid and you are done.

We'll have a video tutorial on this as well.

What is it with all major DOF adapter producers claiming the lead the industry in light efficiency in industry.

Red rock : 1/2 stop light loss - best efficiency in industry, and superior color contrast when stopping down

Letus : Letus 35 Extreme - The industry's new leader in light efficiency with only 1/2 stop of light loss!

Brevis : The Brevis35 is not only an industry leader in light efficiency, but with a host of subtle...

Well, the only things I like about this so far is the live lenses and the Mattes. I was hoping the next version of the M2 wouldn't look like a brick. I also was hoping the flip feature would be built in and not a seperate part. Since they are seperate it add to the light loss. The M2e might have a little better light loss then the Letus Ultimate, but not combined with the flip. Keep in mind I havven't seen the footage yet.

Brian

The 'lunchbox' was kept to provide a low cost upgrade path for M2 customers. Having the parts separate does not contribute to light loss - the WHOLE system is 1/2 stop. We also made the microX much faster and easier to setup.

Head to head on Ultimate it was reported to us as "the same, except when you stop down the M2e retains more contrast and color"

Footage is next up on the rollout.

thanks for the reply brian. Is it necessary to have the upgraded cine lens? Is there a difference with or without the upgrade lens? I'll look for video.

Well, I for one love the lunchbox design as it allows the adapter to be mounted solid into the two rails. Having owned and used the LEX, the mounting system is as flimsy
the cheap italian noodle from your local Tellini's restaurant.

Hi mcVideo - I'm not sure what you mean by "upgraded cine lens"? There's no requirement to upgrade your 35mm lenses.

So I'd really like to see some shots of the internals as thats where the meat lies, and the outside doesn't really look that different in the first place. The questions I have are;
a. Is the gg still mounted straight to the motor shaft?
b. Is there a way to change the battery out if need be?

Great work Brian. Can't wait to take one for a spin (no pun intended). Call me old school but I love that RR kept the big block look. It makes for a much more solid mount to the rods. When you have three mounts working in relay (to camera, to flip to adaptor, adaptor to lens) something more solid than a lens support is needed IMO. It reminds me of the old SG. I thought that mounted the way things should. Solid mounting has always been a beef I've had with low cost adaptors. I'm curious as to the build on the actual lens mount is.

When you got a lousy mount or any play in the system it shows up big.

Nice work with the FF mount as well. I like the open jaw clamp, always a winner.

Last note: stainless steel rods, good move. I fund aluminum especially with stiff lenses has too much flex.

Will there be improved bokeh? I've always thought the bokeh was a little funny looking (at least when compared to the sgpro), but those new features look pretty awesome.

What can the letus ultimate do that this can't?

i own m2 bundle now.
im concerned that the upgrade wont be as solid as just buying the whole Encore package.
the website seems to laud some pretty significant advancements...says that there is some lens calibration done at the factory, the encore has better power consumption and less vibration (paraphrasing but you get my point) and significantly better low light performance. Im not very comfy opening up delicate pieces of equipment. Some im a little concerned about the viability of the upgraded unit vs the factory built unit..Are you guys saying that i can perform this upgrade pretty simply and have the same exact item as a guy who buys the Encore bundle from scratch?
Also...if i do go with the upgrade path...it looks like I need a bigger riser than i currently own for my package (i dont have a flip module yet, so my ex1 or hvx isnt as high as it looks like it will need to be once the flip is installed). So if I buy the upgrade at $545, the flip at $545 and need a new riser at about $300...im $1400 in for the upgrade. Am i thinking properly here or can u save me some brain cells (and some cash) on this decision by thinking for me? My mind set is that for the extra $500, it seems safer to just buy the encore bundle than doing the upgrade/frankenstein bit?
I hope this post doesnt sound cynical... its purely non-rhetorical.
Im stoked by the new product. Will order either upgrade or full package as soon as i get all my info together
Thanks in advance!
PS...I think we spoke on phone on friday... i was trying to rush order a microflipx for saturday or monday delivery.. it looks like i lucked out not ordering the flip!

I really don't have time for head-to-head tests and I don't have the patience to do it the right way. But what kind of footage are you guys looking for?

Pretty much the standard indoors available light stuff or an actual production/short film/music video deal?

Let me know...

To the RR Team: A+ as usual. And I cracked a big ol' :D when I saw the cage buider's kit.

sparkyza
make me an offer on my M2 adapter, Achromat, Rods, riser.
im using on Tuesday for the first time ever.
ill sell for sure pretty reasonably.
email me at kzn1@mac.com if youre interested.
sorry if im breaching any site rules here by offering this? if so, its out of ignorance, not malice. dont hate!

does the flip unit add improvement to image quality such as edge to edge, CA, and improved falloff? Or is it function solely for image flip? I'm asking this because I'm debating whether or not I need the flip.. I'll be using it with an hv20, a camera that is no big deal to mount upside down.
