GH2 New A-cameras to match GH2...

Quite possible, because most of us get artifact free footage out of our GH2's, even when handheld.

(And you definitely did something wrong with that house fotoage. That ain't normal.)

Agreed, I'm not one to speek negatively of another's skills, but that footage looks wrong in every aspect. We've been shooting on several GH2s for quite some time now (just got several GH3s) and I've never had footage look that bad in terms of M&A...

In fact, here's some footage from a previous outing we had in Israel... it was all run-N-gun footage... with little time to perfectly set WB, exposure etc, so it's not the best looking but still...

Yes i must have,i only started filming in the late 60s,perhaps my GH2 has a video fault but dont patronize me.

You should probably take your arrogance down a notch. You either have a faulty GH2, which you couldn't detect despite the myraid of examples on here, or you simply don't know what you're doing. Neither option supports you being arrogant about how many supposed years you've touched a video camera.

I thought the same thing, if your shooting a fence that produces moire, your gonna see it whether your on sticks or not. I'm guessing a CMOS camcorder will have some sort of optical filter to reduce moire/aliasing. But usually at the cost of sharpness.

I also don't understand why Flinty says you have to work hard to get a good gh2 image? If attaching a lens, turning the camera on, and setting exposure is hard, it could just be your lazy:) The gh2 does have an auto setting for lazy shooters. :) I'm just busting your chops Flinty, cheers

Lazy Useing my heaviest tripod for most video

[Supposed] you sound the arrogant one ,i dont give a damn if you believe when i started, you were probobly not a seed when i started but thats not something for me to rejoice at,i dont say i am a great film maker by any stretch having only won a few local film competitions and i find it strange many dont get the problems i get with the GH2,i know as this is the GH page some dont like the fact i get superior video from my XA10 .Some think i dont work hard enough despite useing my heaviest tripod for most GH2 work, since the GH3 came out there has been countless pages of downers against the GH2 but woe betide preferring a mderately priced camcorder for video.

I don't want this to be taken personally, but that is the worst footage I have ever seen filmed with a GH2. In fact I'm finding it hard to believe that was shot with a GH2 at all. My mobile phone shoots better video than that (literally), so I'm not surprised you side with XA10. Have you ever used another GH2 to the one you own? I really think you got a lemon there.

On the subject of aliasing; it is there whether you move the camera or not. You might notice it more when it shimmers with movement, but it's there to exactly the same degree.

Thanks for being honest Will, one thing i can say is the the M & A only starts when video recording starts,i can see that in the lcd or viewfinder.

Yeah, flinty, I gotta concur with everyone else on this thread so far (apologies to the OP for the complete thread hijacking). There is something very, very wrong with what you posted. This camera really shines at not having moire or aliasing, so like many others have already said, I'm having a really hard time believing that was taken with a GH2 at all.
You're recording in 1080p, right? Have you flashed the firmware to defaults or tried any of the hacked ones floating around? Something must have gone wrong somewhere.

That is seriously the WORST dslr footage I have ever seen, including the cheap Canons. And like Will pointed out, having it on a tripod shouldn't make any difference at all- artifacts are there no matter what. Seeing them on the LCD doesn't mean anything, as the LCD is a "nearest neighbor" re sample for speed. It very often has moire patterns and lack of edge definition due to the preview nature of it. You need an external HDMI monitor or watch the footage on your computer to see what it will actually look like.

So i am faulty cinematographer despite getting good M & A free footage from the Canon and all previous camcorders.
Well if my XA10 which does 25P in a wrapper like the GH2, does not have it in 25P or interlaced and the GH2 does in both including 24P as well, regarding your strange post work flow suggestion, are you saying all GH2s have moire and ailising and post processing is needed to get rid of it,its on any non tripod clips,as i have said before http://vimeo.com/57369071 looks exactly the same playing raw clips direct to tv or monitor.

JIM SIMON it is true if that had been filmed with a tripod it would not have been there to any noticeable degree, any movement of the camera exagerates it.

I'm gonna go ahead and call you out on that one... there's no way that's GH2 footage, not in a million years. Upload the original MTS file, or don't make claims like this... really. It's fine to make valid observations and complaints, but this is REALLY pushing it.

Apologies to the op as it was me who sent this thread in another direction. I hope the op can indulge me in just one more sidetracked comment.
Just to try and clear a few things up - I think flinty has made a genuine mistake in misinterpreting his gh2 footage - but what you should have done flinty is listened to the people who flagged this up a while ago rather than ignore and repeat and then continue to post about the terrible moire and aliaising on lots of different threads.
Hopefully the very least this thread can do is get flinty to sort outhow they are interpreting their
25p footage and therefore realise that their gh2 is actually a pretty capable little camera or they do indeed have a broken one

Since the GH3 came out, there have been countless pages of complaints against the GH2, but woe to me for preferring a moderately priced camcorder for my video needs.

No one cares if you prefer the XA10, don't just go around spreading FUD when you either have a faulty unit, which happens, don't know how to operate the GH2, or know how to do proper post-production on the footage. You've been provided countless examples that contradict your experience.

More films, with a tripod mostly and as much care as possible at the time.No hijacking of the thread intended but it was about observations comparing the GH2 to cams.

Well, no, it was about pairing a camera with the GH2 that was more robust. The OP was clearly very pleased with his GH2.

I believe you that this is GH2 footage. A quick google seach confirms my original suspicion that the problem is that you're not de-interlacing the footage properly (if you're shooting 25p), or just shooting 50i.

Gary i want any advice, but if the footage is like that on the raw files as shown when on direct replay from the camera you are saying deinterlacing would cure the edited footage. As i have said 24P is the same, thanks

Guys, it's 2013. Why is anyone even saying the word "deinterlacing"? De-interlacing went out back in 2003 when 24p was first introduced. It's something that should never, ever be done, ever ever ever, ever again. Ever. If your footage was shot in progressive, you should never under any circumstances ever ever ever be de-interlacing.

I'm not one to beat around the bush, that wouldn't solve your problem. If you could post a file direct off the camera that exhibits the problems for me to download (not youtube streaming I need the original file).

I can't remember the exact reason, but I know that the aliasing you see on screen while recording isn't representative of what's recorded to the memory card. I'm guessing due to a less-than-perfect down sample to the LCD screen to save on processing power. Either way I actually find that quirk to be quite useful when pulling focus by eye.

One more thing; a heavier tripod won't reduce moire or aliasing. I don't doubt your film making experience, but comments such as this do make me doubt your technical knowledge within the digital realm .

Truth. If it's progressive shot in an interlaced wrapper (GH2 25p) that does not mean you need to deinterlace it. It means you need to interpret the footage as progressive in your NLE.

I would definitely go a GH3 as you already have all the accessories (I'd imagine) from the Gh2's. Doing a swap to another brand and platform (video) means you need batts, lenses, cases, filters. I really know of no other cam that gives you the quality and flexibilty of the Gh2's and 3's for the price. I'm a video guy, shot news and corporates for years on digibeta and XD and the Gh series are IT.
PS. Flinty that is bad footage shot badly - even your tripod is not level - check the verticals then check your NLE set-up.
