new 7D rig for food show

So I picked up a 7D to go to a convention and shoot some video and stills and was rather impressed with the camera overall but realized that I need to improve my skills.

What I have is a:
Canon 7D
16GB Sandisk 60 MB/S CF Card
Canon f1.8 50mm Prime Lens

I found my footage was rather ok to start with but not all that stable and focusing seemed tricky.

I am continuing to learn about the camera, mostly stills are shot with CA mode, and am getting used to manual focus and working on making handheld shots more stable.

I am planning on shooting some cooking videos in the future as a pilot for a web series.

I can think of 3 main gear deficencies I face now.
Support: Lack of tripod makes everything shaky. I was looking at the Manfrotto 504HD as its geared to vDSLR shooters? Is this good?
Lens: Canon 17-55 f2.8 zoom, looks like it should be good for alot as a do-it-all lens, and maybe a EF-S 60mm for close ups.
Lighting: I am not sure what to do for lighting, if a small hotshoe mounted LED light will do or not, but I want to make sure the light doesn't make the food and drink look unpalletable.
