"A new histogram display for shooting movies in manual exposure, shutter-priority (Tv) and aperture-priority (Av) have been added, and exposure modes will also be available in movie mode. Improved audio functionality will allow users to set sound record levels manually using a sound-level meter displayed on the LCD screen."

7D gonna get this stuff? I'm interested mainly in the manual control for the sound levels...AGC blows...

winge, complain and harass Canon until they release these features for all of their cameras. It worked for the 5D crowd.

Haha yeh! I wonder if it is hard for their software engineers to apply those audio updates to the 7D though...

I haven't heard anything specifically, but it seems like they would do the same for the 7D. Obviously manual audio control is the big one.

Do people think if the audio levels can be manually adjusted will the 5D,7D,2Ti be able to record professional sounding audio? Do the DSLR's so far have the internal quality needed or would an external recorder still essential.

*It seems to me this is the final piece for the DSLR's to become more viable video cameras (along with jello reduction) I hope it is beefed up in the future models.

Without xlr inputs, you are never safe from interference . This is a nice to have, but you are still better off using an external recorder.

It would make absolute sense if Canon were to release a similar firmware update for the 7D, considering the 7D has always been more of a video/cinema camera than the 5D Mark II ever was (variable frame rates, drop frame, dedicated start/stop recording button, sensor closer to super 35mm film, manual control from the get go, etc...) Who knows though, it is Canon after all. I'm very impressed with their commitment to their line so far. They may not be quick to respond, but better late than never. Question is, what is this going to do for Trammel and the Magic Lantern firmware? Will it help him, or will Canon's features be implemented better than Magic Lantern? Sorry, I know that's a little bit of a tangent.

I have no personal information but I would guess that Canon will eventually add AGC disable & histogram to the 7D. I think they are seeing these being used by professionals and finally stepped up to the plate on the 5D, I think the 7D will be no differant. I don't buy into the speculation about them being worried about the video division as they wouldn't have made these upcoming firmware changes to the 5D

Yeah I'd guess totally different teams of engineers handle these different cameras. So whatever the 5D gets in a new update will likely take a while to proliferate over to the 7D if at all.

Does anyone have a link to a request submission form where we can harass Canon about ACG for the 7D?

We'll might find out soon, once the 5D gets that going. One would guess the audio components are the same, but truth is they may not... Still, if the 5D's internal recordings are clean that will be a very big breath of hope!

Of course you would still use external pre-amps, which generally account for most of the recording system's noise. The ACG would only be used to select a level where the internal pre-amps' noise is minimal, then external professional pre-amps would send a strong and clean signal to match.

Well, monitoring is still and issue. How can one be certain that anything gets recorded and that it's clean audio? Will the FW update have VU metering?

The audio features are nice but they're just sort of a stop gap. It depends on how they do it. If you can use one of the rings (I would say the front ring for aperture and the back ring for sound) to do it, and it adjusts fast, that would be amazing. They give level metering I think?? Now we just need headphone.

The audio in the camera is just to record the signal, not to monitor or adjust gain, that is done by the mixer/boom-op in one man sound jobs. Good boom operating + good mics + MM-1 + one affordable wireless + recording in camera = fast and clean no budget jobs.

Ha, Canon does this and now people are expecting more goodwill. They let the cat out of the bag now. Good thing is, once Canon puts something into firmware, it will propagate into new products so we can at least count on the 7D replacement to have all the goodies and then some.
