New 5" SmallHD monitor: 502

Indeed - there is no 'right answer'

My setup is small monitor.. feeding to big monitor(s)

So I like a small monitor which I use handheld and then feeds to 7inch monitor for sticks work or in the directors hand.

If the FS7 small monitor worked properly (it still doesnt) then I would live with that, but this SmallHD thing seems to be a good replacement for the FS7's small monitor.

No only individual answers ;)

I find it to work great with the monitor/EVF on the FS7 and I only need a larger monitor to check exposure, white balance and provide a better view to my clients. But I'm sure there will be users of this SHD 5" that finds it to work out great for them. I'm not to keen about image quality from SHD monitors but maybe the newer ones are better.

I contacted SmallHD and they replied with the following in an email:

"We will have a locking power connection option for this monitor. Stay tuned for more info in the next few weeks."

just wish they'd included a hirose port for powering the thing (having to bring extra batteries and and additional battery charger just adds unwanted extra bulk to the camera kit).

only thing I can see it no power input (apparently)

It's just that the difference between 3.5 and 5 is to small to justify using an external monitor. IMHO.

Well except for the low resolution of typical 3.5" moinitors vs the 1920x1080 resolution of this new 5" monitor. While I agree it is harder to see sharpness differences on a smaller monitor the resolution difference can make a huge difference. Plus this new monitor is the perfect size for somebody to create a loupe for. I already use a loupe on my GH3 and it helps a lot even though the LCD resolution is low. A 5" loupe on a 1920x1080 display would be like looking on a huge full HD monitor.

Excellent! I bugged them yesterday about getting a hirose port or something similar attached to it :)

5 inches is just to small. I liked Atomos Samurai blade but the screen size is just to small for anything serious.

Disagree. 5" is the sweet spot. I have been looking for the perfect on-camera monitor. This looks like it could fit the bill. Anything bigger doesn't belong on the camera.

If you are using prosumer cameras they have flip out screens. But for large professional cameras like Alexa, F55, F65 and even Epic a small screen like that can be handy.

Just got pricing on this.

502 HDMI/SDI Field Monitor (Batteries/AC Power Adapter NOT Included) - $1199USD

Sidefinder - $1499USD (I'm pretty sure this is the 502 + Lopue - please correct me if I'm wrong).

The 502 and Sidefinder look like awesome products. Personally was hoping for something like $799 for 502 + Sidefinder. Wishful thinking it seems.

Guess I'll be sticking with my Shogun for now.

Thanks.

So the lopue is "coming this summer." Since the 502 is available now, I wounder if those of us who buy it now for $1199 will then only have to pay $300 for the lopue later? Or is the $1499 a special package deal when you buy both together? Hmmm.

I contacted SmallHD. Buy the 502 now, and the viewfinder will be $300 when it's released this summer.

Make sure it has the features that you need. On their website under "specs" , features I consider critical for my purchase such as cross conversion peaking and waveform are listed as future updates. The remote is also listed as a future update.

Kind of a bummer that they decided to do a reduced portion of the screen for the viewfinder. I would guess this was to keep the optics and size of the viewfinder smaller and better proportioned for the screen size.

I might actually prefer a 5" loupe for this screen instead of the viewfinder.

Marvellous and everything. However. What about use scenarios? Don't you guys feel that straight up monitors are becoming more of a niche product these days? I mean, screens and EVF on cameras are getting better all the time, and on some video cameras are good enough so that adding an external monitor doesn't bring much to the party. On shoots with such cameras, I actually rarely see external monitors... this seems more like DSLR and special situations like stedicam use and the like. In other words, I'm not saying monitors are not the bees knees when the use scenario calls for it, but there are simply fewer and fewer use scenarios these days, and at this point I must think long and hard before I'd part with $1500 for a straight up monitor that doesn't have something else going for it, like a recorder or some other added value for that kind of cash. If this was like $300, I'd buy it, but $1500? Pass.

To me an EVF is a 'special use' thing - for brutal sun when full eye enclosure is a must.

Operating on sticks say at waist height an evf is a back killer.

Handheld? any lo-mode, waist height or any non shoulder operating EVFs are basically useless.

Not one sub alexa/f55 camera has the EVF in the right place for a balanced rig anyway, so 90% chance even if the camera comes with an EVF you will have to dump it anyway!

Also seeing round the image helps you end moves and keep the boom out of shot - overscan would be awesome!
