New 5" SmallHD monitor: 502

Looks pretty good, hope the use of the joystick instead of touch screen brings the price down enough for a purchase.

Seems very excellent to me.

Ive been eyeing up the transvideo but they dont communicate - so no sale.

1080, non touch screen, small, really this does all I want luts (subject to chekin it!)

only thing I can see it no power input (apparently)

I assume it captures stills of the screen and saves them to the SD card. Not sure why I would want that but hey neat.

About darn time somebody works with a smart phone supplier to use mobile phone panels for a video monitor. We have had Smart phone (Android) for awhile now capable of 1920x1080 on a 5" screen. This just really makes sense as long as the price is right. I always wondered how long it would take for somebody to gut a smart phone, slap some battery plates and hdmi ports on the back and make a great portable monitor.

I do have some concerns that the website doesn't mention 8bit or IPS display so larger higher monitors may still be a bit better in terms of color accuracy.

Looks fantastic! Precisely the monitor I've been waiting for. The Transvideo Starlite has a tonne of a appeal, but its lack of False Colour metering is kind of a deal-breaker on that one. I just wish they'd included a hirose port for powering the thing (having to bring extra batteries and and additional battery charger just adds unwanted extra bulk to the camera kit).

I reckon the capture button is use for capturing a screen shot of recorded clips (frame store) and overlay it on the monitor. I find it useful as a reference for continuity.

5 inches is just to small. I liked Atomos Samurai blade but the screen size is just to small for anything serious.

I disagree.. there are a million options (DP7, O7) if you want a big monitor. (which I think is horrid on a handheld rig)

This is perfect for shoulder work - actually it almost asks for an optic to become an EVF too.

Personally I have big cheap old monitors (DP1x) and to pass a LUT through from a small clever monitor is perfect

You may ask why I dont want an EVF for handheld.. well they are no good if the camera is at waist height.

Ref the FS7?

The onboard monitor is quite flawed..
-cable not long enough to create a balanced rig
-no WFM and LUTs
-I feel I could focus better with a LUT
-wont work with gimbal/crane/steadicam

Hopefully some of those things (WFM/Luts) will be cured by the FW which I am now downloading! The quality of the FS7 FW means a lot about my future monitor choices.

I guess we all have individual preferences on what works and what doesn't and to me, having had to many monitors during the years, 5 inches isn't worth it and I'd prefer 7 inch monitors. I'm sure this new SHD monitor works for some but not for others and I'm one of them.
