F5: New 4K XAVC SONY PXW-Z100 for under 5000 Euro ?

There were rumours about an FDR-AX1 on Sony sites ...Same thing but with a different model number ?I guess we will know more when IBC starts?http://www.creativeventures.be/sony-pxw-z100.html

It looks like an EX1 on steroids, doesn't it? The real question is; what kind of sensor does it have? I can see a real use for this in ENG work. Imagine being able to reframe your shots, zoom in, or steady them out and still have true HD resolution.

The rumor is $5,000, which is less than Euros, isn't it?

Here's some CES 2013 video of a less complete prototype:

Some say it will be Quad 4k, not cine 4k, since the leaked XAVC/S recording wrapper is a variation that supports only Quad 4k. XAVC/S supports both 8 and 10 bit, 4.2.0 and 4.2:2.

It's all rumors though. It would be a shame if was 8bit 4.2.0 to protect the "pro" series.

Will definitely not be super 35mm, so what will the sensor size be I wonder?

1/3" is pretty tiny to pack 4000 photosites on but surely not impossible for Sony. 1/2" maybe?

Guess 35mm adapters might make a come back.

I would be waiting for a CineAlta branded camera for event/ENG work with a minimum of 1/2" sensor with a Quad HD output and a clean unprocesssed signal out the back with BNC connectors. This is the equivalent of an NXCAM with Quad HD output. I doubt this camera is much interest to most here.

In the recent past (can't pull models out of my head at the moment) Sony released NXCAM models with equivalent CineAlta models coming out shortly thereafter, like within 6 months or so.

Agreed on 2/3" for myself I was speaking to the general audience and what we could probably expect from Sony. Further I would also want to see a EVF with an equivalent form factor to the EX3 but able to decently pull focus on 4K / Quad HD.

Sony had a hit with the EX3 in terms of functionality. Too bad they don't capitalize on their winning designs and incorporate them into models going forward.

Look at the lens, classic scale of a 1/3 zoom.

We all know that 2/3 zooms are twice this size (or rather twice the Crosssectional area and therefore 1.41 ties the size)

If the sensor is a 2/3" on the XDCAM version then the lens probably won't be a 20X zoom. I would expect 10X or less. The only image we have is of the consumer version which will be 1/3" with exmor R technology using the 20X zoom. We'll find out tomorrow.

The little Sony HX30V has a 1/2.3 sensor and a 20x zoom f3.2 to f5.8 and takes nice stills and video at 60p and in good light is as good as my NX30U, CX700 or my NX5U. It has a very small lens. The latest version the HX50V has a 30 times zoom similar specs. We will see tomorrow hopefully.

I highly doubt they would put a 3.2-5.8 lens on a xdcam camcorder. They would use much higher quality glass. on the conusmer model maybe. Less then 24hrs to go.

Exactly. A 1/2.3" sensor is smaller than a 2/3", I believe between a 1/3" and a 1/2" chip. You need a small sensor to have a 20X zoom range, at least on a small handheld cam for under $5,000. And an f3.2 is a slow lens compared to most 1/3" and 1/2" fixed lens cameras. Ex - a 1/2" PMW-200 has a maximum F1.9 aperture on a 14X zoom. A 1/3" JVC HM600 has an F1.6, 23x zoom.

If this camera has a 2/3" chip with a usable 20x zoom for 4K, that'd be really something. I hope it does.

The point I was making was the lens/ sensor relationship. The lens on the KX30V is really small and the sensor bigger than 1/3 " The operating range is not that different to the NX5U with a much larger lens but a practical range of f1.8 to f4 for sharp images. Sensor technology has changed to be much more sensitive and with lower noise clearly evident to me looking at the difference between my NX5U ( almost unusable at 12db or more ) and the CX700 or NX30U able to go to over 21db of gain and still have less noise than the NX5U that has a much older sensor technology. I hope it has a 20x zoom and have no problem with it having a narrow operating range for good performance because I have that now with the NX5U.

This would be great. Even better if it would record to XAVC. This would be my dream documentary camera!:) (if the sensitivity holds up, which I doubt it will on such a small sensor with so many photosites).

Yep, buy an F55 for $30k or just get a 4k 1/3" or 1/2" Sony and dust off the link to the Letus website

Or get a Blackmagic 4K.

I doubt this camera coupled with a 35 adapter would resolve anything near 4K, or even look as good as a Blackmagic Pocket camera.
