New 4/3rds (not micro) DSLR from Panasonic...the answer to all our problems?

If you really know what you are doing the GH 1 is pretty amazing. If you just complain and complain about its "limitations" it definitely won't work for you. To those who complain so strongly about it and have gone the 7D route, which I think is a great camera also, please show us the wonderful and professional work you have done with it.

BTW: The HV20? Totally amateur camera. Nothing to rave about at all.

The guys at Panasonic must laugh real hard when reading this forum. Because somebody shot a few things in an "HD" camera in the past couple of years and read "a lot" about codecs and NLE's a definitive authority on the subject he/she ain't. Of course Barry Green is the real master! And he praises the GH1 even though its shortcomings. I myself say thank you Panasonic because you have given us again a camera that shoots great footage with plenty of bells and whistles right from the get go at a great price point. I am excited because next time around I know that they will improve on an already pretty awesome product. And by that time I will have made back my investment many times over and be ready to purchase the new and more exciting toy without any qualms. Again, thank you Panasonic and keep up the good work.

Well, to be honest, neither of these cameras (7d or GH-1) reproduce color accurately. I seriously do not like the color out of the 7D and was only slightly happier with the GH-1.

Even RED wasn't gripping skintones all that well out of the gate, though.

I'm not even sure how much it matters given how much people hack and slash their image during "Grading".

Kholi, you always liked Panasonic color like me right? Like when the Varicam and the Cinealta were the best of the best, which did you prefer?

Good point. Then again that also makes good color more important, in the hope that people will realize they can leave it alone and have a way to get something great without a colorist.

article ben b posted says in bold no video or in body stabilization.

Pass.

Honestly I'd be more excited checking out Olympus's upcoming models.

1. They now have full manual controls with the EP-2 and mic input

2. In Body Stabilization

Hoping there's an Oly 2010 DSLR with 1080P and the necessary ingredients

Well, honestly, I always thought the Panasonic mojo was over-saturated. Haha. I was NEVER a huge fan of it. The gaps between the DVX-100B and GH-1, although the GH-1 arrives from a completely separate division in Panasonic, I was never a fan of Panasonic images.

I kept my cameras because everyone loved to use Panasonic, but openly pined for Canon flavor, and even Sony at once.

The Varicam and HPX-3000 are mild exceptions.

I don't disagree with you though, Roberto, a great color base is essential. I don't think either is there... I'm sometimes uncomfortable with the "plasticity" (not a word?) of 7D color.

Recently, RED's color reproduction has gotten very pleasing, especially with more pigmented (see:ethnic) skin tones.

Isn't this a headache? Haha

And there is your Tylenol in a little Red bottle.

Not sure if you saw the teasers he posted last night. But those are without the OLPF filter and mid-Graeme-tweaking. He only posted them to show static noise at high ISO. He is ironing out the build 21 magic to fit the sensor as we speak. Jim announced full grabs from M-X in "a few days". :)

Oh I definitely saw it. ISO 4000 made me look at my DSLR and shake my head. LoL.

They're good for what they are, though.

I will say that I hadn't lugged the RED around for a while up until a shoot two weeks ago, I'm re-spoiled again.

ep1 and ep2 if you count those plus they have a relationship with Panasonic.

To play devil's advocate, honestly Panasonic is new to photo and I think that hurts the GH1 as there's no fast zooms with IS in their lineup and they're losing ground vs. Canon which already has had that for some time.

i had a relationship with a stripper when i was a virgin....did it make me a better lover? nope. but i DID learn how to handle money.
my money is now with the GH1...it suits my needs, as i am not as professional as some of you.

I would say that Panasonic is doing very well in the photo department.

Their TZ5 has been very popular and the LX3 been hard to get for around a year especially if you wanted a good price. The TZ7/ZS3 are even more popular than what it replaced, the TZ5. The GH1 weren't easilly available until around October and now the GF1 especially the version with the 20mm lens is very hard to get and B&H doesn't have any version in stock.

The biggest issue they have is keeping products in stock.

Exactly. Panasonic is doing very well in both video and photo.

I do think the GH1 could look fantastic on the big screen. Look at "Dispatch", or at our (forthcoming) "Depth of Phil" or "Shady, Texas"... those are all GH1 productions, and they look simply stunning, even on a 24" monitor from 1' away -- which is closer and more visually magnified than a theater projection would be (except from the very frontmost rows).

The GH1 has its issues, certainly, and can turn out some ugly artifacts, but used judiciously it can also turn out amazing footage.

There you go. The GH1 has the Panasonic image MOJO.

I still find it very hard to believe this rumored camera wouldn't have video. Or maybe I just don't want to believe it.

I'm still very much so waiting on the next iteration, hoping that those small tidbits are updated or improved so I can go back to GH-1 land.
