New 35mm adapter

awesome bklyndv, once the stills and more footage of tests appear for the dvx ill glady buy 1 off of you. I've been looking into a 35mm adapter for quite awhile and this seems like the perfect oppurtunity to grab one.

Anyways i can test the adapter out for you on a dvx100a, vx2100, xl2, and vx1000.

Yes, just to be completely clear:

There will be a $209 adapter that will have grain evident in the footage. The grain will be less than what you might see in other ~$300 adapters, for example, and definitely less than what is seen in that test clip I posted, but still present, and with some tangible (1-2 stops) light loss. When the prototypes arrive -- "by the end of this month" I'm told -- you can bet I will be showing off a lot of tests so you can decide for yourself whether the amount of grain present will affect your purchasing decisions.

There will also be a ~$500 adapter that will be near grainless, with little or no light loss. I'll be running tests with this adapter concurrently, and likely do a small "shootout" between both.

Thanks for your interest, everyone. I will let you know more as things develop.

I know others have posted support for your project, but I thought I'd chime in so you know that yet another user would likely purchase the Go35 or Go35 pro, depending on how each demo's. Keep up the incredible work, and keep us posted!

bklyndv,

I may have misunderstood or missed the answer to this if so I appologize.

Your claims about the Go35 pro have made me rather excited. Have you actually built one of these and tested it it out yet?

If it delivers what you say I am doing the freak-freak in anticipation of it's arrival.

Q's:
Is the design going to accomidate different lens mount options. That is to say, can you unscrew a nikon mount and attach a canon mount?

How far do you need to zoom through on this adapter?

What is the size and weight? Will rails be a necessity.

Most importantly, You have mentioned the minimal light loss and grain but how about the focus. How soft does it make the image?

Thanks, I'm excited to see this sucker.

rook,

Give me two weeks and I'll have footage to show of both adapters, which will put to rest a lot of your questions. Yes, I've built them, but not with the parts I plan on selling, which I'm waiting on, so I don't want to show footage until the final parts arrive and I can be certain that what I'm selling to you works as well as I can make it work here.

I really don't have a lot of concrete answers for you as I'm unsure how to guage, for instance, the zoom through, or even the weight -- I don't have a scale here. Size? I'm waiting on a few different tube lengths right now to see if I can make it smaller than it currently is (about 4.5" total length).

The image is razor sharp -- that's never been a problem. It's the grain that is proving to be the issue.

bklyndv,

Man that was a fast response. Thanks. I'm anxious to take a look.

I'm currently shooting with another adapter and the softness and lightloss have been a bigger issue for me than grain.

I'm anxious to get my hands on an adapter that can be used in run and gun situations, indoors, and deliver professional results.

Good luck with the manufacturing and tests. I can't wait to see the footage.

Two weeks? That'd be about enough time to get it in with the shoot-out with the others (My35, Letus35, SG35, etc.)! Shoot, with as great as the Pro version sounds, we could look at even holding off a week, if needed.

I'm sure everyone would be interested in seeing the side-by-side footage. I know I'm itching to see the Letus35 Flip in action compared to the rest.

Envision,

I like your style. if the go35 pro can find it's way into the shoot out, it'd be helpful for my decision making.

The shoot-out is a great idea and I'm glad you're following through with it.

I'm interested in buying one of these. I liked the footage you shot. My favorite moment was the one behind the coffee maker. It showed the shallow DOF well.

Cool, that's my favorite shot, too :)

Ah, on the shoot-out -- the Pro version is looking to have a pretty obscure focusing element which will cost me a steep investment just to have one test unit shipped to me for evaluation. Once/if the screen proves successful, then I will have a run of them made and won't feel so uptight about shipping the only unit I've got off along with the only 35mm f-mount lens I've got :)

Rest assured, once I've got everything into place, I will be more than happy to put both adapters through rigorous tests, even taking "requests" on what to test, shoot, etc. Two people from this board have generously volunteered their time and DVX's to throw in the mix, so there shouldn't really be any problem conveying the quality effectively.

I've offered to even buy a lens for your specific mount, as long as you'd purchase it back at cost + shipping, assuming you'd want the adapter back as well (so we're not going into financial costs to do this shoot-out article for DVXuser).

So does this mean, even with other options than sending your only F-mount lens, that you will not be entering the shoot-out with either adapter, to compare against the others? Sounds like there should be time, from what I've read here, and we can put off an additional week, if need be, which we may be doing anyway if Jonathan thinks he can have a G35 ready by then.

bklyndv. Why wouldn't you want to do the shootout? I was holding off on buying the g35 because I thought you WOULD enter it. Now it seems like you just don't want to.

It's not simply a matter of wanting to do the shootout or not -- I'd love to enter, but the logistics, timeframe and cost to me are just not stacking up as favorably as I'd hoped. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious, but at the end of the day it's my reputation on the line.

If my entrance into the shootout is the hinge on which your purchasing decisions swing, then by all means do what you're comfortable with knowing I'm most likely not going to be entering. Certainly I regret it if pulling out costs me your business, but I'd rather lose one customer and deliver a product I'm proud of, that is affordable to many, than make claims I'm uncertain of just to satisfy people's expectations.

On the other end of things, I can tell you I have two years experience building and testing these things. I've spent something in the neighborhood of $2,500 on materials, to say nothing of the time and energy I've expended to get these things done right. When the time comes that I've got parts I'm happy with, I will test the hell out of my adapters and open everything up for the community to see -- I know the weak points and problems of the shallow DOF setups available, and I'm going to demonstrate how my adapters deal with them in good time. Shootout or not, you'll know everything you need to know in order to make a wise purchasing decision and feel confident spending money on a product I put out.

I'd appreciate it if you'd just be patient and allow these things to come to proper fruition. I'm kind of in limbo right now, largely at the mercy of parts suppliers, so all of this speculation and heat, while understandable (glad you're excited and interested) certainly isn't helping my progress. Moreover, there's not alot I can do about it any way.

As an aside, I really have to give the community here a huge hand -- I can't tell you how moving it is to have so many people reach out to me in private and offer help in several ways.

So, thanks!

Sorry, Jim, about any undue pressure. Remember, however, that it was you who first showed interest in entering the shoot-out, when you asked me if you could participate as well.

I was simply trying to follow through & encourage you to do it, as you'd originally expressed interest.

I think the fact of the matter is that there are a lot of people that have been holding off from getting a 35 Adapter for a while, and are looking forward to this shoot out. Those manufacturers that particpate will naturally draw more attention, as the information will be available in a timely manner, and will compare adapters amongst a peer group in the same study/set up, so there's a true apples-to-apples comparison & report.

Not to mention, it'll be listed as a new article/sticky, and will draw lots of attention (free advertising) to everyone that hits the DVXuser home page that might not otherwise visit the DIY forum, where this is listed.

That said, I respect your desire to wait until you feel the product is perfect, which is something the G35 crew has been doing for quite some time as well.

Just not sure why you showed interest in participating in the first place, since it now appears that was premature.

bklyndv,

I was a tad let down you're not doing the shoot-out. But hey, make that sucker as good as you promised and all will be forgiven.

Good luck with the development, I'm rooting for ya.
