New 35mm adapter

Hi,

I've been kicking into high gear trying to find parts suppliers so I can buy in bulk and pass some savings onto my fellow filmmakers. As it stands now, the irony is that I can buy "branded" components much cheaper than I can "generic" components with no outer markings (i.e. ThorLabs tubing). So the first run of these things will have a charming, DIY look :)

As of mid-February I will have the adapter available for sale and it will, in terms of optical quality, compare favorably with others at a far lower price -- $209 each, plus shipping.

The design will be static, and the GG will be "upgradable," so as I make improvements to the GG element, I will offer upgrades at a significantly discounted price to previous purchasers.

I have a LOT of experience building these things -- my relationship with the DVinfo DIY community stretches back two years and I've poured a ton of research and money into the project.

Look for my adapter in the shoot-out.

I downloaded that clip about 4-5 months ago, now that I know you're on this site could you answer this question.......That was with a GL2, right??

You're Jim, right??

Quick questions....

Quick questions....

Just to get more info out....

1. How "DYI" looking will the first run be? Are we talking JB weld and duckt tape?

(Ha! I know you'd never do that to us:thumbsup:)

2. How long will the adapter be?

3. Wax or GG?

4. Is it HD ready?

Thanks!

Yes, I'm Jim. It's a GL1. I'm a few months off of buying a DVX-100b. This adapter might help put the new cam in reach sooner.

As for the kind of ground glass? It's still in development, so mum's the word. I can tell you it will be better quality than what's seen in that footage.

Length of the adapter should be around 4.5-5 inches.

As for its DIY look -- right now, the cheapest components are from Hong Kong suppliers and they are all labelled with their brand, so the initial run of this adapter will probably have a mix of DIY and commercially branded parts. Everything will be built to last, though. JB Weld's a good product :D

Just know that I will constantly be improving the design and will offer agressively priced upgrades for early purchasers.

HD ready? I've no way to tell as I don't have access to a proper HD cam. I won't make any promises though... it all depends on the GG which as I say is still in its last stages of dev.

Doesn't sound like you've got much margin worked in there for yourself. Careful, man, you still have to put bread on the table! If I'm not mistaken, I think the My35 is also quite low in price, though I don't believe it's THAT low.

I know you've already PM'd me about getting yours to us, so we'll look forward to it. Do you have a name for the unit yet for marketing, etc.?

I do have another worthy question:

It seems you have yet to purchase your own DVX100, how do you plan to really craft a 35mm adapter for it? I'm assuming that you have access to one, but it's just to be sure.

Otherwise, sign me up as well. Hope you're including yourself in that price margin. But I want one for my shoot. I can use the extra 200 I'll save on something else for my short.

Sign me up too!

Footage looked awesome, can only wait to see what it'll look like with the improved gg and on a DVX.

I have at least two DVX's available, one here in NYC and another in Philly, and if need be I'll go down there for a day to check it out.

Let me just say that right out of the gate I want this thing working on the DVX over any other camera, and it'll also work on the GL1/GL2 simply because I own one here and it will be my first go-to cam. But the DVX is certainly where I'm headed as a shooter, so it's a priority.

From there, who knows -- someone has already asked if it will work with the Sony HDV cams and I'm anxious to see, but I'd need to find someone in NYC willing to meet up for an afternoon and test it out.

Sounds like you're all about your business.

Took me a second to think about it, but I get where you're coming from with that price tag. And I'm not saying that because I don't want you to raise the price. =P

Hopefully we'll see footage, pics of the peripheral, and the likes by early february so I can purchase a unit!

Looking forward to it.
