New 35mm adapter

I would be really happy if you posted a pic of the adapter itself. Appearance is important, you know:p

 Keep up the good work

I just saw the original first posted clip and now can understand the rave thats going on about this adapter!
Finally footage with people in it!
Real people!!!
Hahahaha, isn´t that what most of us are shooting anyway? I really would like to know, that my cam or adapter is high res, but its the look of a scene, the rendition of light, that counts for me in the end...
If you can´t enter the adapter shootout, but will deliver more footage like that with your finalised design - I´m ok and sold!
KEEP ON KEEPING ON, HELL YEAH!!!

--- BTW I nevertheless appreciate all the res-chart testing of all camera related things, maybe this will save my ass someday when moving to the big screen xxx

@moderators: what happened to that nice spellcheck feature? us non-native-english speakers liked that mucho gusto!

hey 2 weeks isn't that bad. I swear I was waiting for the g35 since b4 summer :P. They are making a good product though it is a little over my budget.

edit: petterson, he did actually post a picture of the adapter b4, i think it should still be somewhere on this thread.

Yes, GL1 (unfortunately). The $400 rebate on the DVX ends, what is it, March 31st? Whatever it is, I'm saving every penny I can until then :)

I like your av, BTW -- can I get a copy of the full res image?

Spartacus,

yeah, the footage looks great and I'm dying to see the pro footy but shooting people with an adapter is kind of misleading for tests. If the adapter is soft people still look great. Infact the often look better as the softness mimics a frost or diffuser. It's the edges that we want to look at for aberation and sharpness.

This adapter's footage looks pretty clean and the bokeh looks nice.

I promised I wouldn't rush him but I'm anxious to see the pro.

-hope it's coming along well.

I wasn´t talking about taste here, personally I don´t like the soft look some of the adapters produce. Years ago we used nylons to get rid of the sharp videolook of our MIIs - and it just looked like a cheap porn movie (no, it wasn´t porn...).

Honestly, if the pro adapter version sells for sub 600$, all I need to be convinced to buy, is an uncompressed (well DV...) file of a nice lady in that café eating croissants and drinking steaming coffee, while the afternoon sun gives us all the little reflections we need to debate about weather the bokeh is nice or nicer...
If the res-chart testing comes out good too on the go35, I will tell the reporters that the movie they are seeing is not only artisticaly outstanding, but also technicaly superb hahahaha

...but P+S better have this res-charts handy when they charge new car prices...

You know, this is kind of funny, but you've hit my feelings on the nose. I really think all the shootouts and res charts in the world really don't prove what counts in the end -- can you put an interesting image together, convey an idea, and move your audience?

My girlfriend has watched my project of 35mm adapters progress over the years and is now to the point of shaking her head when I nitpick the footage. "I don't see what you're talking about" she tells me when I grumble about the grain, and this coming from a grant winning photographer. It's the isolated community of armchair cinematographers that we've become or surrounded ourselves with that has been both a boon and ultimately a detriment to this project.

It's also the same kind of compulsive need for "perfection" that allows the industry to lighten our collective pockets every year -- what we have might work, but this new gadget is 1.38457% better and the res charts prove it! I think it's kind of backward to think this way, just as I think ultimately, while I value the effort, the 4-way shootout has far less to do with my enthusiasm (or lack thereof) for the HVX than does a single post by Marc Singer.

That said, I'm highly allergic to being accused of hiding anything about my product. In the end, I'll be open to tests and whatnot to showcase the Go35's strengths and weaknesses.

As a development aside...

I've had more than a few HDV and a couple HD shooters ask if I'll have something that will work with their setups. Initially I'd begged off the idea entirely, but have begun to revisit it. I'm certain doing so would require a vibrating/non-static solution, and the irony is that I could build a moving GG adapter for cheaper than the initial Pro setup I'd been thinking of.

A static adapter of a certain quality (i.e. "near grainless") requires a few choice components that are pretty pricey. If you move the glass, you can do so for significantly less. Thinking about it this way, I can see putting together the Pro adapter as the Go35HD or something similar, and it would work equally well with SD material, cost less than the Pro might've, be the same size as the Go35 Standard, etc.

I'm still going to play with a static Pro to see where it gets me, but it might be logistically and cost/return speaking a dead-end.

What do you all think?

BKLYNDV,

The vibrating issue isn't one I'm opposed to as long as it is battery powered, noiseless and compact.

We are all going to be making the switch to HD sooner or later and being able to bring our adapters along is important.

For me the biggest issues remain as sharpness, grain and quality of bokeh.

Vibrating or not- I don't care as long as it helps without causing problems.

If you can promise all this and on top have a cheaper price, the answer seems obvious.

I'm excited to get my hands on your adapter. The G35 is far too pricy (not to mention impossible to get) and the lower end adapters just don't provide professional results.

Work fast, we're dying.

I hear what you are saying. However, as my projects grow I start to see the opportunity to show my work in different formats, and being transfered to other forms of media.

Little issues like a bit of grain or a tad of softness can become huge problems later. The issue becomes for me wheather the trade-off is worth it or not. For the cheaper adapter's I've seen and used, the answer is no, they're not. They're great to play with but I can't deliver a product that I'm 100% confident in.

I'm excited for your adapter because, to be honest, it promises a professional result on a budget that will not cripple me.

And for that, all yor nit picking and obsessive quality control is appreciated by me.

Please keep it up,

I agree with rook who agrees with bklyndv and eehm right..

Most off the stufff I did the past couple of months ended up on 15x10 meter screens (not sure but i think thats 45x30ft) and grain, bokeh, sharpness.. well you can imagine the effects. Did a nice big HD project with some cirque de soleil artists: nice stage lighting, lots of smoke and mirrors (so to speak). Looked fantastic in HD but everything was supersharp even on this nice Sony HDCam, no film-like DOF. I would use my little DVX with this adapter instead a HDCam any day if it produses the DOF images beyond your test footage.

One thing that ddoes worry me i putting such a large extension on a plastic lens, to me this is just a bad accident waiting to happen? Anyway, have loads of nice old Nikon lenses to use with this adapter and my birthday is coming up this year!

Hope you try to figure out some prism and mirror flipping in the futture :)

Bklyndv, if you're still looking for DVX testers in the NYC area, I live in Brooklyn (off the F train) and have a DVX100B that I might be willing to make a guinea pig of.

Lets keep this thread going. . bump it up a little.

PS: I would love it if you could FedEX me a go35 sometime within the next 2 weeks. At no extra charge.
Thanks.

Cute...

Word from the parts supplier is that a new prototype will ship out tomorrow -- should have it by Friday at the latest. It should be the last revision before mass production, at least *fingers crossed*.

Once it's here, pics and footage :)

I don't mind if you put a moving gg or what not, but can that extra moving part make it easier to get broken or say get jarred out of place perhaps? if you cna make it a moving adapter and as small as the standard go35 "that would be great" -lumberg.

I can't wait for the new pix and footage!
