New 256 gig 1200X KomputerBay CF cards

How do these guys do it? I thought Komputerbay was repackaged Lexar cards but Lexar doesn't have a 1200x card on the market so....???

Interesting to see the write speed of these cards.

I'm not sure exactly how Komputerbay does it, but usually there's only a few companies actually manufacturing the chips and all the other brands are just buying the chips and putting their logo on them. This does not mean that they're all the same though. That chip maker will get variances in the yield or performance and the buyers then decide how much of a variance they're willing to take in exchange for a discount from the list price. So, a company like Komputerbay may take cards that QC 2% lower than Lexar's order, but that doesn't mean that either of them are actually making the cards. It also means that both Lexar's and Komputerbay's cards could have identical performance if you get the right one. The price difference at retail can also be from a few other things like overhead costs. I'm sure Lexar spends a lot more on marketing, offices, employees, etc than a small company like Komputerbay does. For all we know Komputerbay is just a couple nerds running the whole operation out of their mom's basement.

^ That

Plus, take into account that using chips with a probability of fail of <2% doesn't mean your cards have a <2% chance of letting you down. If the card has 4 of those chips, then up to 7.8% of cards can fail. If it has 8, then it's up to 15% of the cards.

yeah... I'd go for 4 64gb cards any day over 1 256gb card. If one card out of 4 fails, it's not so bad.... but if that one 265gb card fails. Ouch.

Atleast I wouldn't trust it too much. Even my "reliable" 64gb cards have a tendency to suddenly decide to drop the data rate or needs to be warmed up before reaching 83 mb/s.

Now testing the KomputerBay 256gig 1200X on the 5DmkII and 7D. Will be testing it on the mkIII tomorrow.

Looking forward to it... I'm really interested in the stability of the card, especially since it's so large. I would hate to have a bad crop of that kind of size and cost. I have 4 64gb cards from Kompbay and one of those cards just crashed completely after unloading a job.

( really, are people still buying komputerbay cards after reading this kind of stuff? ^ )

hahaha... I just noticed that I made a Freudian slip writing "hate" instead of "have" xD... made it sound a bit worse than it is.

1 of my 4 cards crashed completely. The other 3 are recording continously fine :) Just did a 50fps music video the last two weekends. Aspect 1.85.
Apart from the annoying squeezing from ML, it went fine.

Well, I have to admit that I bought one knowing some of the horror stories, but so far so good as my 64gb card has been working just fine. I really bought it just to play around with raw, but if I have a reason to shoot a proper paying job in raw, then I'd get more consistently reliable cards. I also think that we're just hearing more of the horror stories as those get a lot more attention than "nothing out of the ordinary/works fine" stories. ...or at least I hope so since I have one of these cards.

The new 256 CF cards will run Magic Lantern and can be seen by the cameras we tested. The 5DmkII 5DmkIII and the 7D.

But it offers no speed benefit based on our tests. The cameras data bandwidth is perhaps the limiting factor in this case.

I will organize my tests results and give a better and more comprehensive write up on it later.

FWIW I just received the 1050x 128gb card....I guess I lucked out as I got a fast one. Measuring 95mb/s in Magic Lantern on my 5d mkIII. I did have to upgrade to a new IOgear USB 3.0 card reader....the card wouldn't show up on my Mac retina laptop but its all good now.
