New 200 buyer - what Windows program to transcode 4K > high quality 1080P for editing

Just wondering what you guys suggest.

Moving from HMC150 and wanting pristine sharp 1080P to work with at the moment until I build my new rig :)

Thanks

I just put my UHD 60P file on the 1080 timeline in EDIUS and edit. I do not transcode anything. You will need a fast computer to edit 4k/UHD though. I have an i7 4790K and this will edit a single UHD track fine but multicam with another 3 tracks of XAVC-S causes a few problems. This is the way to edit if you want to crop rather than just use the whole frame. If I use it in a 4 track multicam I just create an intermediate HQ file to use for the multicam with the UHD disabled then go back and substitute the track when done. Makes for a smoother editing experience and then I can do the cropping/panning etc.

Thanks Ron,

Im using an i3770K at 4.5GHz with Win7, 16GB RAM and Sony Vegas 11.

I havent upgraded NLE for a while as it works and later versions havent given me much cause for upgrade ... till now.

Editing 1080p from my Nikon D800 is horrible so thought 4K would be 4 times as horrible hence looking for a transcode :)

I have VEGAS 12 on my second PC which has an i7 3770K and 16G RAM and will see how it performs with UHD later. I am off out now so will reply later. I think it may work fine with reduced playback for the preview.

I just tried a 3840x2160 60P file from my FDR-AX1 on a 1920x1080 60i timeline and it plays fine in VEGAS 12 with playback on Preview auto. Sort of thing you may do to create a DVD or Bluray. That is on my second PC which is i7 3770K much like yours. Stutters a little with playback on full best.

Depending what frame rate you're looking for, I'd suggest just shooting dual codec rec UHD on one card and 1080p on the other. It downsamples the UHD and produces sharp 1080p, no transcode required.

I´m using Edius 8.22WG at the moment.
Works pretty well. The qualtity of the down converted HD video is nice and crisp.

For just transcoding I really like Footage Studio 4k. Lots of flexibility for ouput formats and for how scaling up or down is handled. Simultaneous batch transcodes of one file per CPU core. Writes camera AVC format timcodes to SMPTE code in Prores, DNXHD, Cineform DI formats. www.acrovid.com.

No need to transcode anything. Shoot dual formats in your memory slots. One 4K (like a master) and one 1080. Edit with the 1080 if your system isn't fast enough to drive 4K, and then before final export, relink your 1080 files to the 4K masters. Boom. Oh, you will have to scale the 4K shots in your 1080 timeline, but that's a simple step. Do the scale move to the first clip and then copy that property to all the other clips.
