That's a pretty good list!

Freaks and Geeks. That show is like a time machine for me, perfectly capturing what it was like to grow up in the 80's, but in a realistic, non sitcommy fashion. The show was cancelled after one great season but was kind of ahead of its time in terms of its filmic production values. Its astonishing how much talent was in that show, in front of and behind the camera...James Franco, Jason Segel, Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow, Paul Feig, Jake Kasdan...the list goes on. Definitely worth watching. Makes me laugh harder than most so called comedies these days. Great writing, acting, directing, soundtrack, oh and Bill Pope shot the pilot.

I don't know if it is on Netflix but I would recommend the Australian crime horror "Snowtown" - came out around the same time, very different. Not gangster, but about based on true story serial killer. Very dark, but very good.

Thanks Dan, I'll hunt for it. - I'm a fan of Aussie cinema.

If anyone else is also into aussie indie flicks, check out Sleeping Beauty

Starship Troopers. I've been re-evaluating Verhoeven's work lately, having watched Robocop, Total Recall and this one. I always liked Robocop but seeing it again I marveled at how efficiently constructed the screenplay is. Total Recall I thought was just okay when I first saw it. On my recent viewing I appreciated the ideas in the film more and Arnold's performance (maybe his best) although I still think the section on Mars gets too cheap looking and claustrophobic. Still, it went up a notch in my critical esteem. Starship Troopers I downright hated the first time I saw it. I got the satire but thought it veered too far into camp, and didn't really care about any of the characters. Seeing it now, with all that's happened in the world in the intervening years, the satire rang more true. Also, after a decade of spastically edited, shaky cam action films, I have a greater appreciation for seeing action on screen that is comprehensible and well orchestrated, and doesn't skimp on the effects of violence. The CGI holds up surprisingly well too. I still wasn't really invested in any of the human drama, but I appreciated the other aspects of the film much more this go around.

ecstasy of order: the tetris masters
