Netflix Instant Watch: What are you watching?

The Avengers cartoon Season 2, it's so great. I was hooked from first episode of Season 1 and now can't wait for Season 3.

John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 (1976). A great movie to watch to study filmmaking. There isn't an ounce of body fat on this movie. From the script, to the shot choice, to the editing, use of locations and the score, it's an incredibly lean and precise piece of work, a great primer on how to make an independent movie. The HD transfer looks like it was shot yesterday too. It's also a lot of fun to watch.

Last season of "Dexter." I keep hearing how this company is supposed to be some kind of media juggernaut in the next few years. Not if they don't improve their streaming selection! They rarely seem to have anything I want to see, especially TV shows. I'm sure it's some contractual nonsense and non their fault but it's a pretty terrible selection in the grande scheme of things.

:undecided

What, no interest in Jack Reacher, The Croods, or Red Dawn 2012?

OK Chuck, I may have oversold it....the movie selection is pretty terrible.

But sadly, these days I only have time for 1 hour shows, if that. The original programming has been great:
-House of Cards
-Orange is the New Black
-I saw one episode of Lillehammer that was good
-I'm told to watch Derek

Josh mentioned all the buzz surrounding Netflix, I expect good things to continue in the near future with the original programming. Or I could be wrong, who knows.

Also:
-Dexter
-Portlandia
-Breaking Bad
-The League
-Arrested Development
Tons more shows to list......

So I guess if you like TV series, it's worth the money. Feature films? Yeah, steer clear.

PS: Extreme Cheapskates!

I'll admit they've gotten some of the stuff that I was looking for, recently (I don't think they had Dexter, Breaking Bad, or Walking Dead until very recently--don't hold me to that though). But I don't see why they're two+ seasons behind on American Horror Story and certain other shows. What's the holdup? Some contractual thing?

Slightly off topic. . .I will absolutely swear I saw an episode of Portlandia that was a season ahead of what was supposed to be on there. When they did the whole Bed & Breakfast bit, I absolutely swear I had already seen it a year ago. And I didn't watch it on TV. Could they already have had it encoded/ready to go and mistakenly released it ahead of time with the last season's shows? Really weird.

Maybe it is just me, but I really find their instant streaming library lacking.
+1

It's almost like they're daring me to quit. First the DVD selection became "Rental Version" only with no extra features. Now the streaming selection is getting cluttered with crap while the movies I actually want to watch are all disappearing.
I dropped the DVD part a while ago, and I'm just not watching much at all on Netflix these days…maybe it's time for us to take a little break Netflix.

The lack of response tells me DVD is here to stay. Folks don't really give a rats fanny about resolution. Bet ya Blu Ray is as high as the bar ever gets set. 4k will come, but it will be an addition, not a replacement for 2k.

Its a trend, the more stuff that gets stuffed on the web, the more isps will skimp on bandwidth. Ive got fios 50 down 25 up and what used to be all hd is now looking like vhs lp. I dont hear much outrage though so its sure to continue.

I can honestly say "my little pony" has never looked better than streaming in hd on netflix.

I sorta give give a rat's fanny about resolution, but between my kids' stupid cartoons and my wife watching Damages, I never see anything I want.

Al, to answer your question (sorta) our netflix is like a car engine on a cold day. Starts off lo res/janky for a few seconds and then it turns over and we get a full hd signal. occasionally, it completely drops out and the kids cry, but that is rare.

I have Verizon Fios and paid for a bandwidth upgrade. A speakeasy test today showed 56 Mbps down and 36 Mbps up and earlier tonight I watched another episode of House of Cards and it looked like SD to me. It looks to me like they are throttling it.

I haven't streamed in several weeks (have a backlog of BD) but Comcast tests @ 41 :smiley_do / 9 :smiley_up
Glad I don't have any huge uploads to clients right now...
:embarasse

hey thats funny. i AM on comcast (not my choice included in rent) and i did just try to upload huge files. a client in a foreign country requires ftp, so i am trying to ftp 24+ gb of qt movs converted from xdcam raw footage. it is not going well.

i hate stuff like this, because it always ends up being the consumer that gets screwed. i guess we won't be seeing 4k streaming anytime soon.
