Netflix 4K

FWIW, the European Broadcast Union (EBU) rates cameras too. They have eight tiers, from 8K down to HD, from cameras certified for major production to B/C/documentary cams. One also has to assume, since EBU predates Netflix, that the rating is a constantly moving target because the once dominating 3 CCD models are gone and long forgotten. Under that notion, one also has to assume that Netflix, at some point, would start disqualifying the 4K cameras, as it moves up to 6K, then 8K*.

* This doesn't mean it'll quit streaming in 4K but that it will want 6K/8K files.

The next one is FS-7 (Raw, X-OCN)...

The FS7 is only approved when capturing XAVC-I. It’s also necessary to use the Extension Unit for Timecode input.

AFAIK if a camera doesn’t have a Timecode Input it will not get approved.

The point of the Netflix list is for productions contracted for Netflix specifically. So it does not affect outside productions directly.

HOWEVER,

There are standards at pretty much every distributor, network, whatever you want to call them these days. It can take a lot to keep these up to date and while large operations like Discovery Networks can afford to run a full time office to test technology and advise their contracted productions, many simply do not have such resources. So they follow the lead of the majors. For years the standard bearers were usually BBC and Discovery, but Netflix made a major push forward both with its scale of production as well as raising the standards. There are a ton of standards coming, some of which influence what computers, monitors and home TVs will have in them in the coming years. I am not at liberty to share such info, but major manufacturers and providers are working together in alliance to raise the quality of what makes it to your home. This is not a conspiracy, it's a good thing. It's everyone agreeing to a set of mutual standards, and thank you to Netflix for being the 800-pound gorilla to be able to get everyone to agree.

This is why Netflix standards are important to those on the outside. Because where it leads others follow.
