Need some help...

Hi, I am brand new with this forum, I just purchased the hmc40 last week. I have been shooting with a Canon GL2 for the past 4 years so I am all sorts of confused with HD format to use, how to view the .MTS files on my PC. I have tried using the MainConcept AVCHD Transcoder from Panasonic's website, but when I try to transcode them to take them into my editing program it gives me an error saying that I must use a panasonic camera to transcode... Obviously im doing something wrong here.

Just some newb questions i guess since i haven't experienced HD editing or Cameras.

It would be really nice to know what the best way to do everything step by step for the best quality because i get a little nervous just finding some random converter for the MTS files and it ruining the HD picture.

Thanks in advance

I had problems with the MainConcept transcoder not recognizing files as being from Panasonic too. But then all of a sudden, it started working. (So don't give up just yet!) I'm using a Dell XPS M1710 laptop and I transcode directly off the SDHC card through the laptop's card reader.

When you get it working, you will love the MainConcept transcoder. I bought the Elecard HD suite for transcoding from the camera and the free MainConcept program blows it away.

What computer and NLE are you using?

Well, I am right in the middle of changing my whole studio around.

What i mean by this is:

Changing from Standard Def to HD (CURRENTLY)

Changing from Adobe Premiere to Final Cut Studio (NEXT WEEK)

So right now I am basically just trying to find the streamlined version for both Premiere and Final Cut.

I finally got it working... I read up on another post, I basically just needed to re-format my SDHC card and then re-record and it worked fine... Now i'm just trying to figure out the settings to use with the camera to record

I'd recommend Barry Green's HMC150 Book. Lots of data on dealing with HD video, as well as, much information that will apply to operating your HMC40. it'll have you up to speed in several nights of reading.
