Good Lord!
Okay, listen to ME, I'm a girl and I know exactly what you need to do. First,
when she talks to you, does she give you her full attention, or is she just being
polite and is really into talking to her friends instead? If you have her attention,
then you talk to her after class for a few weeks.
That's right, a few weeks. Make it two or three. FAMILIARITY makes a girl secure.
The more she talks to you, the more comfortable she feels around you. The
more willing she'll be to go out with you.
After a trying day at class, one in which you don't know what the Hades the
teach was saying, you ask her out for COFFEE. That's right. A coffee date
with no intentions of this going anywhere else.
Coffee means if she finds you boring she can escape quickly, as can you. It's
not an intimate surrounding and you can ask her to join you after class, after
the day is over, to TALK about homework, anything surrounding that particular
subject.
A coffee date initiated by you should happen only weekly UNLESS she suggest
you go out to a movie or some other place. Otherwise, after two or three
coffee dates, then you can move in and ask her out on a real date. By then
she won't be nervous and will really ENJOY herself.
One thing you guys don't know about girls is that most will be guarded UNTIL
they can trust you. Those girls that matter anyhow. Do you know what a girl
wants during a date? Conversation. Someone she can connect with.
So start with coffee and talk about that class. That's my advice.

Sounds like some pretty sound advice.
