Need new mattebox for AF-100, any suggestions?

I have a Redrock mattebox on my AF100 and I couldn't be happier with it. It is well build and does have verticle adjustments.

Just my 2 cents.

Get it. You won't regret it IMO.

I was thinking of getting a less expensive mattebox like the indiSystem, and something like a Redrock rails system. I wonder if anyone knows if these will work together.

The O-Box and the ARRI MMB-1 weigh essentially the same. Listed weights can be deceiving as they do not necessarily include rear bellows, rings, flags, etc. Many configurations possible.

Both of these matteboxes are at the standard 85mm height. Cavison is nuts for not being there! Positioning should happen at the rod baseplate, otherwise you're just chasing your tail.

Note that mattebox lens coverage is tradionally listed for a S-35 sensor lens projection. M4/3 will allow use of a considerably wider lens.

Yep, I', sold. Going with the O-box, bellows, side brakcets, flaps etc... and can't wait to take it our in the field. I'll provide my thoughts here after it shows up but so far it looks awesome.

Yeah, but is it really a good idea to grab your whole system by the mattebox?! Like this video suggests?

That's what it's designed to handle. The matte box is connected to the rails just like the tripod is, or handles on a shoulder mount set-up. O'Connor built this to take the weight etc - since most AC's have been grabbing the matte box for years anyway. Often with disastrous results because the other boxes weren't designed to take the weight.

Well I already ordered the O-box and all of the add-ons I could think of. They're on 1-2 week backorder so I'll be able to share more insight after it shows up.

The point of a mattebox is to be able to not only use larger high quality filters (that you can rotate) but also to block out as much light as possible; more than a lens hood anyway. As some of my shoots are in the Middle East where the sun is blistering bright and everything reflects off of limestone building and such a lens hood just doesn't cut it. I actually had a shot ruined up by the Syrian border because of sun glare because I didn't have a mattebox wing positions just right. They're worth their weight in gold if they fit your shooting enviroment. I went with the O-box not only because it's half of the weight of the redrock, but also if you're going to get a matte box, you might as well get one where you can mount things to it like lighting, monitors etc, plus I heard the thing is built like a tank so you can grab it to tilt the camera rig or hold it stead if I'm bent down going through an ancient cavern or tunnel.

It works for me, but a lens hood might be fine for others. Depends on what you film.
