Need new mattebox for AF-100, any suggestions?

With the Redrock matte box how well will that work with their new v3 follow focus that's supposed to come out. It's going to be studio style with wheels on both sides. Pics I've seen of the Redrock matte box look like the mount and swing-away part will get in the way of the follow focus wheel on the dumb side of the camera. I currently have the Cinevate Titan matte box and am finding that the vertical rods are getting in the way of my hand or with the wheel itself on certain lenses depending on where the focus gear of the lens is.

I saw a prototype of the v3 at an AF100 event a couple of weeks ago. The second focus wheel is optional. In its regular configuration there is just one focus wheel. It looks like a great focus. I'm really looking forward to the easy to set hard stops as I often shoot without a focus puller.

I definitely want the 2nd focus wheel. Makes it easy to switch the direction of the focus gear for still and cinema lenses. You just take the follow focus off and flip it around and because Redrock uses that quick release it's a snap. I wish there was a matte box with a quick release. The only other option is to put the matte box on the lens, which I don't want to do, but might have to consider now. I ordered a Genus Nuns Knicker to see if I can replace the donuts of the matte box with that. hopefully it will give me more space between the lenses and matte box to allow more room for the follow focus and more room for the lenses' changes in physical size when focusing.

I'm using the Redrock mattebox on redrock rails, and that puts the height just where you want it.

That's really good to know. I'll be using all Redrock with the AF-100 accept for the baseplate which will be a Zacuto Universal but I'm pretty sure it sits at the same height as the standard RR base. I also have a RR baseplate next to me also but I just don't care for it compared to the Zacuto. :-)

I couldn;t wait until this summer so my RRFF V2 just showed up which is pretty nice but I'll for sure be upgrading to the V3 when it comes out. Looks awesome.

would a universal cheese plate get you high enough? How much do you need to bring it up?

The lens is only 10mm too low but I think the RR mattebox will fix all that, especially since it can be vertically adjusted+ or - 10mm. If I used the base that came with my priginal mattebox it would work just fine but I just don;t care it as much as the Zacuto or RR one.

I'm using a RR Mattebox with the Zacuto Universal - works great.

If you don't want something as huge as the Redrock mattebox, take a look at the OConnor O-Box. Very reasonably priced and it offers tons of functionality. Much more appropriate for the AF100 un my opinion.

Disclaimer: My company sells this product. Still think it's great.

I ordered two of these (locally here in Toronto)- I've played with one and I love the articulate handles that can attach at the bottom and sides.

The Zacuto Universal and Mini Universal base plates seem to be the best fit for the AF100 because they are so adjustable. If you want something smaller Chrosziel has a baseplate designed for it as well.

Oh man..that is tempting. I picked up a used O'Connor 50D and now I am in love with their stuff.

I have an O'Connor 50 from the dawn of time… It's a great head.

Ya, and awesome for someone like myself who can't afford a brand new head of that quality. Still looking for a good set of legs to go with it. Sadly, not much I can look at locally in Edmonton.

The O'Connor and The Arri do not have independent (of the main rails) forward/rearward and up down movements like the Red Rock.

Please give us an evaluation once you've had a chance to play with those O Boxes. I don't believe they have a swing-away feature, but do you happen to know if the Chrosziel DSW-401-402 swing-away adapter will work with them?

I looked into the O-box for awhile last night and I'm really liking what I see but since you can't adjust height on it, is it set at 85mm from center of rods to center of the mattebox? If so, then it should line up perfectly with my lens. Also, does anyone know what the weight of the O-box is with the rail mount? that's a big one for me since the rig is getting heavy already; I want a light mattebox! Their website keeps saying "lightweight" but they don't tell you the actual weight (genius). I've looked everywhere. I'm also happy it doesn't have swing away arm... that's just added metal and weight that I'll get tired of holding.

They don't have swing away - might look at options for that later, but I'ts not a biggy for my style.
