Need log and capture advice

That won't work with HDV.
Are you trying to get a deck just to preserve the heads in your A1 or are you also looking for better device control? If you can deal without the latter, I'd pick up an HV20 or HV30 and use that as a deck.
 
I capture straight off of my A1.
Do you plan on shooting in 24F often? If that's the case, you'll need to get another Canon HDV camera that can record in 24P, it's actually a somewhat proprietary format. Unlike DV 24p, the way Canon does it for HDV is actually 24FPS, no 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 pulldown. I think an HV30 or 40 would work for this, the HV20 is older and might use a 2:3 pulldown making it impossible for it to read native 24p though, I'd have to look in the manual.
You'd be hard pressed to find an actual HDV VTR for under a thousand dollars, let alone one that can work with 24P.
 
Man, I knew vtr's were a little on the pricey side but not quite that pricey haha,
thanks a lot though, I'll probably look into getting myself a 30 or a 40 then.
