Lighting, composition, set design, and scenery is holding you up. Try giving your subjects some 3 point lighting if you can. You can google lighting and get a ton of info on it. The deer in head light style of lighting brings down value on any video. Also once you get footage clean enough through lighting look for a great tutorial on color correction. So many variables to getting that elusive high production look.

Practice makes perfect though and not that we all have arrived as I'm still growing myself.

As far as the clarity you want; are you using the kit lens or something a bit better (the kit lens is really no slouch for 99 bucks, but it's almost impossible to focus). The kit lens does sharpen up around F 4 - 5.6.

Are you focusing manually? Using some sort of focus aid like a loupe, a monitor or (my fave in a pinch) a pair of cheap drugstore reading glasses? (Son't laugh at that last idea - a $15 pair of glasses can help IMMENSELY if you can't afford a loupe or broadcast monitor). In fact, if money is tight, magnifying specs and an old-school dark cloth (Ansel-adams style - black on the inside, white on the outside, toss it over your head to see the screen in harsh sunlight) is far, far better than nothing.

A follow focus - even a cheap one - is a major asset; on most of them you can put metal spring clips on the marking wheel to act as focus stops if you don't have dedicated puller (and even if you do, they're a huge help for rehearsed setups). Most of the stuff I glanced at looks handheld, focus will be much tougher in that case.

But - overall - it's all pretty dull (no offense meant). When the dude is in front of that white globe, I'd have gone really wide and distorted. Play with your colors, that sunlight is bland. Shoot early or late, get sun & flares behind the singer for some shots. It all just looks like you're holding a camera - you need to find unique looks that put the music in emotional perspective and make the artist seem god-like, or (if god-like isn't right) a compelling character we want to learn more about.

Think creatively like that and you're 99% there.

I agree with michael. follow focus would help for sure. If you can invest in a monitor it will be your best friend. I want make shooting music video a full time gig.

In the first clip the lead moves in close to the camera and he gets blown out by the light. There is a rule called the inverse square law that basically says you get a large change in the light intensity from just that small movement. We can skip the math for now, but the way to avoid that is to move that key light further from the subject so that the ratio of the change to the total distance isn't so large. Then set your exposure so that he looks as good as possible at both distances (closest and farthest).
