Hi All,

I shoot with a 7D and a 550D with a Canon 70-200 is, 16-35mm and carl zeiss Planar 50mm.

I now want to purchase a macro however budgets tight so I cant afford the Canon 100mm Macro with IS.

I was looking at getting the "Tamron SP AF 90mm F2.8 Di" I guess my main question is since I havnt shot much with macro's is having a macro lens with IS necessary? and has anyone used this lens to give feedback.

Thanks to anyone who can help :)

Cheers,

Sean.

It depends on what you want to do with it, if its always going to be on a tripod then non IS will be fine, but if you want any kind of smooth handheld macro you'll need the IS lens.

The EF-S 60 macro is another option.. 90-100mm is really too long on aps-c for most applications IMHO. IS is not super needed because you really need a tripod for macro.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your feedback, its true i can only see myself using the macro for tripod shots so I bought the SP AF 60 mm F2 Macro 1:1

I tried this and the 90mm one but i liked the 60mm better :)

Thanks for your feedback!

Co-opting this thread for my uses now since the OP seems to have gone where he wanted with it. First note that I'll be largely using a tripod and doing video but not 100% of the time, and overall I want high doF/bokeh shots. Am about to grab the T2i with the 15-55mm kit lense and am debating the following lenses:

Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM
Tamron AF 60mm f/2.0 SP DI II LD IF 1:1 Macro Lens (for canon)
Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP (IF)

Let's say I'll be shooting SD & HD footage to be used for stock footage for houses of worship (backgrounds behind sermon texts etc.) I will be doing other work but this is the main usage I have in mind initially for these lenses (and the reason for DoF/bokeh shots.)

I picked up the leica 60mm macro at a camera swap meet a couple of weeks back along with a 28mm f2

I am utterly LOVE these lenses. They arent easy for run and gun handhold type work but with a shoulder mount they work lovely, or on a skater. I used to buy Tamron and now that i have the money for some nicer lenses i am very happy i went with Lieca.

And a note to Scalar, the Canon 50 f1.4 isnt great for macro work. Its got fabulous bokeh thought.

Yea I realize it's only ~80mm(?) equiv on the T2i/55D. It still seems like a great lense for DoF/bokeh so I am having a hard time deciding. :)

Yeah the t2i does give it a 1.6x but its not the length of the lens i am worried about its the minimum focusing distance. but then again that matters what type of macro shooting your doing.

Thus the perils of co-opting someone else's thread title are revealed. I'm not necessarily doing Macro, though bokeh/DoF is a surety. The lenses I get will dictate what I'm able to shoot obviously, just trying to decide what to get in addition to the kit lense (which seems to cover general outdoor shooting well enough to get rather than just the T2i body.) Since this thread was about macros and 2 of the lenses I'm interested in are at the start of the macro range....

In any case for tripod mounted (mostly) video footage with lots of bokeh/dof....can anyone comment on these? Assume I'll be using each within its best focal range....
