Need help with AVCHD

I was given video on a DVD that I'd like to import into FCP, but it's in AVCHD format. I can't seem to find any info on it in the manual, but is there a conversion program I can use before trying to import it into FCP?? Or...??? Right now, I can't even seem to locate the disc - it doesn't seem to be recognized. I'm guessing it's just because I don't have a program that's going to read it properly, but I probably just don't know what I'm doing.

Help!

First, which version of FCP/FCS are you running? That's important.

You can use Compressor (comes with FCS) to convert the files, or download the free MPEG StreamClip from squared5.com and use it.

As for not being able to locate the DVD... if it's AVCHD files, I'm assuming it's burned as a data disc and not a video DVD. Is it mounting? Can you see the icon on your desktop or in the Finder? If that's not happening, you may have a faulty disc. If it is mounting, then you need to transfer the files to your media drive, then do the conversion.

Thanks - first, sorry I should have said I have FCP 6.

And no, I don't seem to be able to mount it so it may be a bad disc although I'm wondering if the files are just unreadable and therefore the computer is just not recognizing it. But no, it's not being seen on the desktop or by the finder. I've emailed the source to ask him for another disc and perhaps a different file.

Sorry for the noob question - I appreciate the help however!

So should I try to access the disc through Compressor? Or do you think it would show up in some form if it wasn't bad?

Compressor isn't going to help if the disc won't mount. Sounds like your contact burned you a coaster. If burning another disc isn't practical (or still doesn't work), you may talk to the person about sending you the files on a USB drive or, better, on an SD card or CF card.

I've found that Apple drives sometimes don't mount if they are older drives. I had my MBPro drive slowly die and it would often not mount a disk that another machine could read fine. Make sure that the disk isn't BluRay (as mentioned above) and that it's readable with another machine.

I import all my AVCHD directly through the plug in to the log and transfer in 7.x but you could use Compressor also if that version supported it.

Is this a blu ray disc?
