I am a Hobby videographer and shoot mainly High School Band and Play video for DVD production. I am waiting on my 100b but I know very little about it. Just what I have read in the manual and on the internet. Band concerts are well lit stages, however I shoot 75 to 100 ft. away through darkness. I Have been using Sony Digital 8 Handicam. It did fine with the picture quality (to a point) but the sound is very marginal. Can anybody shed some light on whether the 100b will do the job better. If so what settings? Is 24p a setting I should consider? For editing I use Pinnacle Studio 11 because I like it and it's cheap. Any one know of any problems with 100b and using Pinnacle Studio 11?

I, too, just purchased a DVX100B (used) and purchased Barry Green's The DVX Book.

It contains all you'll need to aid you in getting the most from your DVX .

Enjoy!

I second Barry Book... its a must have for the Dvx. For editing 24p or 24pa you need an editor that does 2:3 pulldown. And for sound from 75-100 ft away, the Dvx wont sound any better than your digital-8, but the Dvx does have xlr ports so you can get sound from an outside mic.

As long as Pinnacle 11 does 24pa, you are ok with using that. 24p is the way to go with what you are filming. I just dont know Pinnacle studio anymore, been a few years since I used that. If it wont do 24p then get a cheaper vx2100 or gl2, maybe pd170.

Also for sound, see if the school has a mic and chord you can use, set the mic up close to the stage.

If Pinnacle doesn't allow for 24p editing, you can always shoot standard 24p (not 24pA) and edit on a 60i timeline.
