Use 3.40d as it won't allow you to make stupid naming errors.
And finally read Panasonic update instructions. Word by word.
If it won't work, just forget about this hack.

thanks svecher but I've been transferring the firmware to the card via an SD card reader. In fact if i try and transfer via the cable the camera prevents me saying that the card cannot be modified?!
 
Hi guys
I appreciate all your help on this matter and know that you're going beyond the COD, but maybe this is now something you'll want to look into as I seem to have a camera that can't be hacked with ptool 3.4d.
It's been attempted by two separate people, both of us work with computers so we are generally pretty good at this type of stuff, one on a mac and the other on a pc. No matter how much we increase the version increment and filename, pressing the playback button just says the no valid picture to display message.
It won't even update with the original panasonic firmware (after meticulously following their own instructions) which at first led me to believe it is running version 1.32 (despite the body saying version 1.3) but then surely it would accept a GH1__133.bin file or anything above?
Is there anyone with a just-bought camera also experiencing these issues? Perhaps there is something installed on the new ones. Either way, I hope this, while being a massive problem for me, at least interests you and can help towards the cause - let me know if you have any questions.

ABnaxus, it's obvious now that there is possibly a fault with your camera that is causing it to not recognize when it is presented with a firmware upgrade request. I'm guessing the other fellow in the other thread has the same problem.

I would present the camera to Panasonic for warranty repairs informing them it will not update a firmware. You need not mention about any hack obviously.

Return it to your retailer plead ignorance.

I just spoke to panasonic and they told me that if it displays version 1.3 on the camera then it has already got 1.32 installed. Therefore there is no fault as far as they're concerned. Shouldn't ptool work anyway? I've tried all sorts of increments - should the file always be called GH1_133.bin no matter the increment?
I'm close to accepting that I've bought a dud, the problem is I have to shoot a documentary in Japan and I'm flying tomorrow. What do you guys recommend for the best setup on an unhacked GH1 for quality of footage? - it's mostly going to be sit down interviews and b roll.
Can someone give me their idea of the best total camera set up for the kit lens.
