I have a PAL GH1 that I bought last week with a class 10 panasonic 16gb card. I've downloaded ptools 3.40d and GH1__132.bin firmware and have followed all the steps to creating some custom firmware. I've formatted my card on the camera, put GH1__133.bin (among other possible names and version iterations) onto the root directory, but everytime I put the card in the camera and press play, it doesn't offer me any option to update, just says there are no valid files to play (normal if no firmware). Please help as I am set to fly to Japan next week and we have arranged for some filming for a documentary that I wish to use a GH13 for.

My GH1 body is a version 1.3 and my lens is at 1.2
it's plugged into the adaptor
i used ptools on a mac with winebottler

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many many thanks

Did you increase the version to "2" or "3".. The first time, you must increase the version and check "Version compare" as well so next time it won't check the version number and you can go back to 132 or just keep changing your 133.bin without upping the version.

thanks guys, i'm charging my battery again but when I first tried it it was fully charged so I'm doubtful. I also have used two underscores and checked the version increment box and saved it as GH1__133.bin
Is this all right?
Anything else I can try?

Cheers again

small caps gh1__133.bin and increment 2

I would not suggest small caps as the original FW comes in all uppercase. format your card in camera. and just because you have VERSION INCREMENT checked doesn't mean you changed the number. And I also would not suggest using the AC. If you're in the middle of a FW upgrade and the power goes out or the plug comes undone, you're bricked.

thanks again
tried small caps same problem. Using battery at 3 bars. Just to check things that I'm taking for granted (lets see how far the noob rabbit hole goes)
- i tick version increment and provided there is at least a one in the box it's going up right? It says 133 in the bottom right of ptool.
- the root folder is the first folder of the card, where dcim, misc and the private folders live
- a current version of 1.3 means 1.32 right?

is it possible that i own a camera with patched software that prevents hacking?

Much obliged

You aren't actually naming it "GH1__133.bin" are you?... as opposed to naming it "GH1__133" with the .bin part being like .jpg on a picture file... right?

So in another words... is your cam seeing "GH1__133.bin.bin" as the file due to actually putting .bin as part of the name in addition to the TYPE of file it is?

This is weird, after many many upgrades all of a sudden I was not able to upgrade. Reformatted the card via camera. Nothing. WTF???

Found the "culprit". Something unkosher happens when files are transferred via USB cable in PC Mode. After copying the file I wait for "Access" message to go away, then properly eject the Matshita DMC-GH1 USB Device. No dice. If however, I take the SD card out of the camera and transfer the firmware file via SD card slot in the laptop the upgrade window shows up.

Weird ...

I used a card reader in my PC to load the firmware onto... then ejected that card and put it in the cam. I'm not a big fan of extra variables with an operation like this... If it were me I'd never connect my cam to the PC to handle these firmware hacks... if you just use the card directly at the cam and directly on the computer (like a removable hard drive) it seems like a lot less can go wrong. I don't want to risk any extra windows communication with my cam :)

a very easy simple solution to naming your files is just click on the file and name it one number higher.

Exactly. When I went to save the firmware changes from the ptool the save box opened up on the folder for the original firmware, I just clicked on it and changed it to a 3 at the end. It actually didn't even have the .bin extension. Original file was GH1__132, clicked on it to save it but changed it to GH1__133 and then saved it. Formated the card on camera, dumped the saved filed in the card put it in the camera and went thru the update process. It couldn't be simpler.

Cheers for all the suggestions but I'm still having exactly the same problem, there's two underscores and it's a new camera.
... so I can see if it's something I'm doing wrong - however, not sure this is within forum rules...
This is driving me crazy, I just can't see how such a simple process isn't working, I'll try any more suggestions??
