Need H4n with 7D advice

I'm shooting a film with the now all so popular 7D/H4n combo. My question is really about the sound aspect (meaning the H4n). The question is this: since i'm gonna be shooting nothing but indoors, totally controlled, mostly two-person conversations with a mic attached to the h4n via xlr cable, should i just shoot in stereo & pick up sound only from the afformentioned mic, or should I set it to 4 channel and pick up sound from the h4n itself as well?

It depends if you have any need for the room audio or want to place the h4n close to another audio source... Most likely you will use all your XLR mic audio in post, unless something went wrong. In that case you have a backup - but its not going to sound the same though...

Use just the xlr mic. You'll save card space, battery juice, and any confusion in post, because unless the zoom is IN the shot, the onboard mic recording won't be usable/ useful for anything.

If this was some kind of musical performance, that would have a use, but just dialog- nope, don't bother.

I'm with Tim on this one...if it's just dialogue, there's no need to go 4 channel...

I would set the h4n to record in 4 ch.
It is your only possibility to adjust the record level control for each channel if you switch to this mode (unlike in stereo mode).
What I do is: mute completely the "n4h on board mics (unfortunately you can not monitor individual channels and those mics are not needed for your recording).
To do this, just press the "mic" button then be quick to press the "rec level" on the right hand side all the way down to zero.
Now, when two XLR mics are connected, press button 1 then be quick to adjust the same "rec level" or button 2 for your desired recording levels.

Hope this helps.
