need faster performance

i am editing with fcp6 and cs3 after effects on a macbook pro with some upgraded ram. now that i am editing 1080 from my 5d, render and exporting times Re very long. i want to upgrade my laptop but feel i must get a desktop to get to the performance i want. what can i do to speed things up. or if i was to get a new editing system what would be the best at a quick job

in short, the fastest you can afford.

rendering 1080P footage on a macbook pro takes time....
it takes awhile on mine, and I have the new i7 one.

ok i know u can build a computer for 20,000 but i dont need anything over the top just so that is optimal for my 1080 stuff

What does "optimal" mean? If you have some "sweet spot" or "target zone" or a definition of "over the top", then you have not revealed it here. Else JPM's recommendation "the fastest you can afford" seems to be the operative method. I can't think of a more appropriate scheme.

although i have a couple of mac 8 cores i think the best bang for the buck is the iMac i7 Quad with hyper threading and now with a 1 GB GPU. i bought the prior version that only has a 512mb GPU but it is very impressive for the mere $2,200.00 i paid for it. its 27" display is also nice. i use an 8 core 2.93ghz but my kid has the iMac and i am constantly impressed by it especially when it costs about a third or less of what my 8 core costs.

the benefits of a tower is more RAM, upgradable GPU in the future and the extra internal HD's. there still isnt much optimization of the 8 cores yet (16 with hyper threading) so your buying power that isnt used yet and id forget the new 12 core until apple commits to writing their software that actually uses them.

first off, you can't build your own if you want to run final cut since that only runs on macs and only apple builds macs. Yes i know people have gotten mac to run on a pc, but i would never trust it to be stable enough. That being said, there is a lot of gray between the mac book pro and the best mac book pro. for faster renders you want faster hard drives. An external raid is ideal. You also want a lot of ram. 12 gb of ram is fine for most people. a raid of at least 4 drives in raid 10 if not 6 or 8 drives will help your speeds. I'd get an exturnal raid for your mac book and see if that helps things out. If not you can use that raid on your new desktop.

Cheaper drive storage in a tower is a real consideration. Another consideration for a tower over the rest is the expansion slots. Hardware assisted rendering can be your cheapest (or very expensive) speed upgrade.

OP is talking about running final cut which means mac which means he probably doesn't have a choice. The 32 bit vs 64 bit thing is a PC thing.
I don' use FCP but I think V6 was 32 bit and I know AE CS3 is. OP was talking about upgrading laptop or new system. IMHO just does not seem to make a lot of sense to upgrade a 32 bit machine or try and run 32 bit software on a new machine. Apologies if I misunderstood the OP.

7 is still 32 bit, but its not such a limitation like it is on a pc

Going to ignore the PC vs. Mac thing. :) I did some reading this morning and FCP only can use 2.5 gig of memory and is not mutli core aware. Sorry if this is inaccurate (I read it on the internet so it must be true). So, in order for the OP to really speed up the rendering isn't FCP the weak link here? Please explain if I am missing something.
