Need buying advice, 14k at hand!

i gotta tell ya. if youre dead set on a canon, more power to you. i think weve made the pros and cons pretty evident. all you can do is choose what best suits your needs.

BUT if i were going with canon and 5Dll was in my price range, i would SERIOUSLY consider a 7D instead. simply because the 7D monitors out HD via HDMI while recording. the 5Dll sends out a SD picture over HDMI once you start recording. for some people this isnt a problem. for me it is, because i frequently have clients watching the live feed. and as i mentioned earlier, clients can be very neurotic ; )

from where i stand, the "full frame sensor" of the 5D is about the only reason to choose one over a 7D

So which camera is something that can be used in these productions that do not suffer from these problems?

There isn't one. That's the point. There is no camera that's either small, S35 sensitive, sharp or "robust in image" meaning no sliasing/wobble.

This is why we have different cameras.

The point being, for 14k, he can either get a lot of glass that will last 20years, and a ok performance dslr camera that is quickly being replaced by newer video cameras/next gen dslr's, or buy a better camera, but miss out on better glass.

Here's what I would do. If you can wait another couple of months to see what Canon and Sony (maybe even Nikon) have coming out this year, I'd do that. But otherwise, I'd go for a Panasonic... GH2. Here's why a GH2 rather than the 5D mkiii. (1) First, one big reason to go for a DSLR is to get into very small places - and the GH2 is even better from that point of view (smaller). (2) Second, it is actually VASTLY cheaper than the 5D - and believe me, there is no reason to spend extra $, because you will always, always, always, always find you need more money for other things... so why blow unnecessary cash on a piece of gear if you're not getting anything better for it? (3) Third - the GH2 is actually superior to the 5D from the point of view of moire and aliasing and (4) WARNING: CONTROVERSIAL OPINION - I don't believe the 5D offers a better image than the GH2 in video (just different) - though, to be fair, yes, the 5D will be better as a stills camera (though the GH2 is not worthless). (4) Fourth, the big issue with any camera, is lenses; the GH2 allows you to use Canon, Nikon etc. lenses for video, so you have (a) a wide choice of lenses, and (b) if you decide to jump to Canon later on, your Canon lenses will not be wasted.

...One last item to consider: How many 5D MK2 bodies do you want to buy, because once your first one over-heats ( the 5D MK2 and the 7D are pretty bad for this when shooting video ) do you want to sit around twiddling your thumbs while you wait for the camera to cool down, or do you want to switch to your back-up body so you can keep shooting ?

What you're looking for is a Sony F3 with an AJA Ki Pro or Ki Pro Mini, or Convergent Design Gemini, or maybe a Black Magic Hyper Deck.

whole heartedly agreed!
ive yet to find the DSLR that didnt come equipped with some sort of nearly (if not complete) deal-breaking compromise.

the DSLR suffering from the fewest headaches, IMO is the GH2 hands down.
but it takes a bit more skill and experience to milk the right images from it. its not as turn-key as the canons.

but i think weve also covered that it has a lot to do with how you shoot, what you shoot. and what your expectations are...
any DSLR can be a fine tool in the right hands and in the right scenario.
or you just have to be at peace with (or blissfully unaware of) what you wind up with...
