Need advise: buy a6K now or wait for LX100?!

Thanks a lot for the helpful dialogue here...I just want a good, usable camera to use for video and stills. I can grab an A7 down the road if I need something more robust for stills (the a6k lenses are compatible in crop, no?). I am wondering if I really need XVAC-S anyway..Does anyone know if the a5100 on Vimeo (the Johnnie Behiri one) is XVAC-s? A lot of the a6k video I see on Viemo is really solid IMO and certainly usable for what I do..maybe I just need to, as another used said, "suck it up" :)

I would just suck it up and buy it. The EVF is worth it, and the camera can produce fantastic images, right now it's my A-cam.

Also if you absolutely need a better codec after using it for a bit, buy a Atomos Ninja Star. Prores with start/stop triggered by the camera.

Haha - ok! Will do. That's my plan. Already have a post up on FM.

Could you explain the Ninja Star? Looks like it's $299 - is that all I need? Sorry to be such a newb -- never used an external recorder. My thinking is this: the a6k will be good enough; if I decide later it's not, I will sell it for a slight loss and cest la vie, who cares. Maybe that would be for the a6100 or 7000, but I'm betting the a6k gets the codec, anyway.

Any recommendations on lenses? I've seen great stuff with the kit zoom and 50 1.8. Probably a good start? Thanks!

I just grabbed a a6k with the kit zoom (16-50) and the 50 1.8. Seems like a pretty sweet, portable kit for the price, and I have most of my FLs covered here.

Can someone explain the difference achieved by using an external recorder on this body? I'm not finding much at all out there..Thanks!

On the topic of the a6000 getting a FW upgrade to XVAC-S:
Besides that auto-translated response someone posted, I also don´t think a6000 owners should have high hopes.
I`m wondering how many point and shooters would actually bother to update their firmware, let alone hang out in forums and actually get the news a firmware is out...
The RX10 somehow was supposed to be Sony`s hybrid (photo and video) camera (as the GH3 was marketed).
I don't know any sales figures but I guess the RX10 is a harder sell than other cameras, small chip, big body, high-ish price.
So it might have a more "ambitious" user base and giving it a bump with the upgrade to clear out stocks makes sense.
The a5100 is the new kid and comes at a time where larger sensor cameras start waving the 4K flag.
So giving it a fancy new codec to make it a tad more exiting and standing out also makes sense.
The a6000 will probably just be replaced.

Well, I pulled the trigger on the a6k anyway so there's no going back (at least for the next few months!). The image looks great from what I'm seeing, though the new codec would be great.

That said, can anyone comment on adding an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja and how that would improve image? I'm really unfamiliar with recorders and at $3-500 I would certainly consider one if it helped with workflow. Thanks!

EDIT: I stand corrected, turns out the LX100 has OIS, its just not highlighted in most places. This would certainly give it the nod over the RX100m3 that uses steadyshot - which I find marginally effective and it introduces an additional crop. Makes the LX100 more appealing for sure.

I still like the image out of the a6000 more with even 1/4 the bitrate. Ha, is there something wrong with me? The LX100 looks pretty video to me. Maybe I'm biased bc I just bought an a6k!

In those blown shots the blacks are much too high - look at properly exposed shots and there's often still detail in the blacks. At a glance, better than the GH2 and more like the GH4. But yep, it's early days.

AFAIK, only steadyshot active introduces crop on the RX100. Plus the big advantage of the RX100 is that it fits in your pocket. The LX100 is surprisingly big for a compact camera, nearly as large as the RX1, and definitely too large for a pocket.
