Need advice before buying please...

Ok,

I have only purchased one thing from DVXuser marketplace before and it was just this weekend and it wasn't a big cost - but here is the question because I am intending on making a MUCH BIGGER purchase this week.
Here is the scoop : I am embarking on buying a camera from the DVXuser marketplace that is going to be alot of money (think a couple of thousand). Now, is there any assurance or reassurance members can give me that items sold back and forth on this board under the marketplace are legit and safe? I am purchasing from a junior member, but I don't know if that actually means anything when it comes to honesty or reliability. What have other members done in this situation when the purchaser and seller are not local to each other and largers amounts of money is involved (BTW, I did read the DigitalDan thread)? I feel fairly confident in this transaction considering I have the phone number, address of the seller, but - is there anything else that people on this board do to make sure the transaction is smooth and without problems? Is Paypal the answer? Is credit cards the answer? I am in new territory here...

Thanks in advance.
PS - I am skittish because I don't make alot of money at my job and this amount to lose would make Xmas a very unmerry one.

Hey,

I'd deal with local if possible, but if not use either Paypal, Escrow (You have to pay but at least you can sleep easily), or FedEx Cash-On-Delivery. The last one is pretty cool. What you do is basically ask your seller to pass your item on to Fedex, who will act as an intermediatery (For a fee, naturally). What they do is that they basically deliver they item for you, allow you to inspect it, then you pay Fedex what your seller wants and once your seller is satisified with the cash on hand, the Fedex man at your location will give you the item. Its pretty complex but safe. Anyhow, good luck and all the best with the purchase. Its a pretty tough call.

if you are really worried, you can also have a trusted 3rd party handle the transaction. That is, you send money, seller sends camera to 3rd party, then sends 'em to you when both have arrived.

What is BIN? I was thinking of the paypal route, but I don't think Paypal offer protection without the item being listed on Ebay. I am going to check into Escrow, I have heard of them ,but unsure how they operate - I guess 3.25% which is reasonable consider paypal is 3% and only covers $1250.00 of the cost. As for 3rd partys - is there a company that does this? Do some of the senior members do this for a fee? (like Jarred or Barry)
Has anyone had any experience with Escrow?

That Fedex deal was being typed as I typed, I guess.... but that sounds like a good "third party" setup.
