C300: Native MXF support in FCPX

I keep finding different answers to this. There's no way to get native .mxf support in FCPX without buying a plugin right? What plugin do you all use? I've also seen some plugins that will re-wrap the files not transcode.

What are you all using? I would rather not transcode all my stuff to Prores or Prores HQ if it's not necessary...

I simply import straight into FCPX and then start editing. Ive got mine set to transcode MXF to prores (changing the flavour to suit the delivery). You can start editing straight away as the transcode is a background process.

The Calibrated software plugin allows you to use the source media without transcoding although I don't like the way it relies on the creation of alias files in FCPX's source media directory. I tried deleting those aliases just to see if it was still possible to relink the media and it proved to be problematic. Just seemed a little awkward to me, that's really the only thing holding me back from giving FCPX another look.

Tried this using the Final Cut Pro X trial version and it does not work. The MXF files are greyed out when I try to import them into FCP X. Works fine in Premiere. I wanted to try both FCP X and Premier to decide which one works for me. Looks like I am going to go with Premiere even though the hardware requirements are more stringent.

you can also set Adobe Media encoder to batch transcode .mxf to prores. works pretty sweet if you have a spare machine to do this

Hi,
Just get the official Canon plugin. You will be able to cut in FCP X without transcoding. FCP X after importing transcodes in the background, so it is not an inconvenience.

I just started using C300 and found that not reading the manual is not a good idea. The reason being, just pulling the files from the card to the hard disk via Finder is not a good idea as the folder structure has to be exactly the same as in the card. One has to create virtual media. Better to take the card and create a media backup using the XF utility. After that when you open the FCP X it is able to see and import the files.
Cheers,
