Native Editing Of AVCCAM/AVCHD Files In Final Cut Pro Announced by Panasonic

My opinion of Panasonic has gone up. Quick firmware update for AF and now this? Wow! now i don't have to buy CS5.

This is good news BUT...

Why do we have to wait 4-6 months??? Have they even started writing the plug-in yet?

Well, the way I see it, you can either wait for Apple to do it, or ...

Any word on Avid? I mainly use FCP, however I have some projects that I use Avid with. AVCHD and Avid do not mix well. I'm using ClipWrap to convert the files to DNxHD, but it isn't a short process. The Avid will import the files directly IF they are under 25mins, but the spanned files need to be put together using ClipWrap or another program.

I think Avid just introduced a new version 5.5 that solves any spanned files issue, didn't they?

That Larry Jordan blog post is the real deal. In fact, I have independent confirmation from a second person who attended the event in Cupertino.

Before you ask, I don't know anything else. Wish I did.

Anyone use ClipWrap for this? They've been out for a while with AVCHD wrapping for quicktime.

My understanding is that you can have it just wrap the files in a QT wrapper, which won't change the encoding of the guts of the file. Or you can have it transcode the file to ProRes, AIC, DNxHD or DVCProHD. Good for a location machine on a shoot, don't have to have a licensed FCP install.

We just took delivery of our Panny AF100, so I might be prone to give this a try, as Panasonics utilities for Mac have been, um, sketchy at best.

I own a copy of Clipwrap and right now, it doesn't work right with AF100 footage for rewrapping. Works great with transcode to ProRes. I've been talking with the developer and they are aware of the problem. They told me they were talking with Panasonic to figure out a solution. From what I gathered, it sounds like a colorspace issue. The AF100 clips do not indicate what colorspace they represent and by not setting anything, what FCP and QT do with the clips is incorrect (Not to say FCP or QT are wrong, just that it is unclear what 'default' means I am told).

No news at all yet. However, if I'm reading it properly, I think that this allows any quicktime application to natively read the files, and if that's the case I would expect that it should work with FCE. But we will have to wait and see.

Any news on this yet? I am sweating like a pig, which means it's summer in NYC. Any idea when this might be released?

the new FCP X handles the files natively- maybe this has slowed the release of a plugin that will soon no longer be needed?

Afaik nobody has confirmed that fcpx handles the MTS files natively, have they?

And even if it does, the Panasonic plug-in will work for fcp 7, after effects, motion, or any QuickTime app.

this was mentioned during the FCPUG supermeet sneak peak at nab. But using if for AE would be very helpful.

hmm .. I thought that was a little sketchy .. you can do some things with the MTS files as if they were proxies. But, there still appears to be
some sort of importing/analysis step that happens as a background task.

I do not remember a definite statement that FCP X will edit h.264 or AVCHD files natively.

I do remember that you could start editing while ingesting the footage.

Yes, FCP X does not work with *.mts files, but only with *.m4v files, which to my knowledge have the same internal structure, but a different container.

So while one can import from a AVCHD-SD-card into FCP X, the embedded *.mts files are then rewrapped into *.m4v files.

If one wants to keep a collection of unaltered *.mts files (as I do), then one stays dependent on an eventual plugin like the one from Panasonic might be (keep your fingers crossed).
