nanoFlash Mounted On EX1

Well its why B&H do a great trade down under, I hear lots of those brown box's ship daily here.

I would always prefer to buy locally, but I am no charity and certainly won't spend that type of premium on an idenitcal unit, its not like the days when you couldn't import a camera as it was NTSC not PAL, having said that even Sony have made their cameras much much more competitive. I'll do my best by local vendors when I feel they are doing their best by me.

There are a few iteams they won't ship outside of the US, some Sony cameras and Nikon DSLR bodies. I've never had a problem getting anything else. I have bought all my video cameras and half of my DSLRs locally because the price was respectable compared to grey market. I even bought my U60 batteries and 16GB SxS cards locally with my camera because the price I was quoted was comparable to sourcing from B&H.

Im pretty sure Mike doesnt have control over the pricing structure of distributors, but you wont find me buying this one in Australia... I'd sooner go over for a holiday and pick one up.

So its not only rip-off Britain, but down under is in the same boat!

I nd prices in the UK a ropoff and often buy through ebay or B&H to save money. I can fly to New york, buy an EX3, stay for three nights in a nice hotel for a mini holiday, eat out at nice resteraunts, see the sights and still get home with more money than the price of one from the UK Sony dealer.

If the average American guy had to pay what we have to here, or you there, I am sure there would be riots!

Maybe so but hey, if our soccer team loses you won't see us fighting and turning over cars in the streets. :Þ

Over / Under Crank on nanoFlash

Over / Under Crank on nanoFlash

Hi Guys-
Not to intervene and move everyone back on topic, I just wanted to mention that over / under crank on the nanoFlash looks quite doable. I did a fair bit of research in the past few days and now have a very good understanding and a clear path for implementation.

We should have Standard-Def, Metadata, pre-record buffer and hot-swap finished by the time nanoFlash ships. Time-lapse, 24p removal and over/undercrank should follow later this summer.

Cheers-

I'm sure out point has been taken, good to be put back on track. How will the SD work? Will it down convert from HD-SDI or is it only for SD-SDI? What are the codec options for SD (any chance they are IMX quality?)

Hi Guy-
No down or cross convert on the nanoFlash...we just did not have the room for more circuitry! Our SD CODEC is IMX at 30 and 50 Mbps. IMX is MPEG2 I-Frame Only 4:2:2. The video quality should be outstanding at 30/50 Mbps, espceically since your are compressing 5.5X times less data (as compared to HD).

Thats excellent Mike, my only concern is what you don't have control over, which is the downconvert. Even from SDI I havn't heard great things about the quality of the downconvert in the EXs, have you had an opportunity to check this out yourself to advise us better?

PS: I did do a test export from Clip Browser to IMX and thought the results were fantastic in terms of the lack of any visible compression & improvements in colour over the obvious basic DV export (I am not about to pay that much for the full set of codec export options however when I was only interested in one...)

All these bits and pieces go together to reduce the real cost of the nano. Save $500 on a SDI-HDMI converter, save $400 odd on the Main Concept codec pack for IMX. If you wanted these it brings the price for the rest down to near US$2K

It's nice to have different options but if what Guy says is true.....that the conversion from SDI doesn't match the quality of shooting on cards.....isn't that a torpedo to the nanoflash?

I'd love if they were the same quality or of course better.

something is missing there, shooting in HD to nanoFlash is pretty much always going to be better than shooting in camera unless you set the nanoFlash to the same 35Mbps mode. So in HD this is a no brainer.

In SD, well there is no option for capturing in camera, where as the nano at least gives you that option.

The question is if the quality of down convert in camera is comparable to popular down convert in post or a SD camera. If it is, then the nano introduces a streamlined high quality SD workflow for EX shooters that they didn't have before. It turns the EX into a 1/2" version of the PDW530.
